On Friday, Feb. 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. Linda Williams and Catherine Pedretti will be playing the mbira, an instrument that originated thousands of years ago with the Shona people in Zimbabwe. It is always handmade and consists of 22 to 28 metal keys mounted on a hardwood soundboard and often played inside a large calabash resonator, called a deze, to amplify it. Bottle caps or shells are mounted on the deze, and they create a buzz required to clear the mind of thoughts and worries. Mbira’s significant function in the Shona culture is as a contact for deceased ancestors who give guidance.
On Saturday, Feb. 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. enjoy an afternoon of the sumptuous sounds of Verna Chan as she performs solo, singing and playing guitar as part of the Sensuality show. Bill Ward closes the show on Monday, Feb. 19 from 2 to 4 p.m. with piano music.
