Gibsons Public Art Gallery (GPAG) presents a unique installation: The Sitting Room by Rayann Gordon, opening this Saturday, Sept. 22, and running to Oct. 15. The reception is from 2 to 4 p.m. at the GPAG. All are welcome.The show is multimedia with interactive design by Eric Miller, audio score by Sheldon Ziegenhagel, featuring music by Theda Phoenix. It invites viewers to sit down to experience the contemplative installation of environmental sculpture, video projection and sound. Ruff Cut
Ruff Cut is playing at Gibsons Legion tonight, (Friday), at 8 p.m. Come out and dance to classic rock and golden oldies from the '50s, '60s and '70s. No cover charge for music and a barbecue chicken dinner is available from 5 to 7 p.m.
Colorifics
The Colorifics return for their bi-annual gig at the Roberts Creek Little Legion on Saturday at 9 p.m. Admission is members $6 and guests $12.
National Theatre?
London's National Theatre via HD satellite continues its fourth season of live performances with an adaptation of Mark Haddon's beloved and award-winning novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Raven's Cry Theatre in Sechelt.
Marianne Elliott (War Horse) directs this richly theatrical exploration of Haddon's touching and bleakly humorous story. Tickets are $15 (general/senior) and $10 (child 17 years and under). Starbuck repeats
Starbuck a comedy in French with English subtitles, has its inaugural Sechelt screening at the Seniors' Centre on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Starbuck was shown at the Sunshine Coast Film Society's opening night to a full house, and it was a huge hit. It moves to Sechelt as part of a pilot project to reach out to filmgoers further up the Coast. Perennially adolescent 40-year-old David Wozniak's past catches up to him when he discovers he has fathered 533 children from sperm donations he made 20 years ago when he generated income from his favourite "recreational pursuit."
Project Nim
In Gibsons, Project Nim, a documentary presented by the SC Film Society, screens at the Heritage Playhouse on Monday, Sept. 24.
From the team behind the riveting Man On Wire comes the true story of Nim Chimsky,
the chimpanzee who in the 1970s became the focus of a landmark and controversial experiment. The project aimed to demonstrate that an ape could learn to communicate with language if raised and nurtured like a human child. This documentary is an unflinching, unsentimental, and at times disturbing biography of an animal that a driven scientist attempted to make one of us. Show is at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 members, $8 single event, 2012/2013 membership $15.
Cinematheque
Coast Cinematheque at Raven's Cry Theatre starts its season with The Intouchables on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. and Wed/Thurs. Sept 26/27 at 7:30 p.m. An irreverent, uplifting comedy about friendship, trust and human possibility, The Intouchables has broken box office records in its native France and across Europe. Dance workshop
Dancers are invited to a workshop on Saturday, Sept. 29 and Sunday, Sept. 30 that will give them an opportunity to dance at the Sechelt Arts Festival on Oct. 12 in a collaborative performance, Fire and Ice.
The workshop will focus on developing a truly exciting piece, set to the music of a cover song of Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal. Participants will collaborate and receive direction from three Sunshine Coast Dance Society residency dancers and choreographers, Lisa Metz, Dianne Doan and Ashley Whitehead. Word on the Street
The Coast's Heather Conn is a presenting author at this year's Word on the Street event in Vancouver. She has been sponsored or "adopted" by Kidsbooks to do a mini-reading and short presentation about her children's book Gracie's Got a Secret, and she'll be bringing a few puppets along to tell the story. That's at 12:40 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30 in the author tent set up on Hamilton Street next to the downtown library. Word on the Street Festival is a great celebration of books, authors, and the power of the written word.
Complaints Choir
Complaints Choirs have sprung up all over the world, notes Steve Wright and the Sunshine Coast will soon have their own version.
It's a grassroots group of ordinary citizens singing about issues in their community in a constructive and fun way. The topics can be anything, and the song is written through a series of workshops. It is then performed in public and the performances are captured on video to share. This is an all ages event and no experience is required. Ultimately it will be part of the 2012 Sechelt Festival of the Arts, so participants must register and commit to performing starting soon.
