Lux Aeterna (Eternal Light), a summer solstice choral concert, will be performed outside at Willow Farm in Sechelt on Sunday, June 21. It features choral works presented by A Cappella Strait, Choralations Children's Choir and the Choralations Teen Choir, under the direction of Janice Brunson. There will be a performance of baroque music from special guests, the Salix Strings.

A Cappella Strait is a 21-voice choir that has just celebrated its 25th year. The choir received recognition for excellence in the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Performing Arts and was recommended for the Provincial Level of the B.C. Festival of the Performing Arts 2009.

The popular Choral-ations Children's Choir consists of 16 boys and girls this year. The Teen Choir was recommended for the provincial level of the B.C. Festival of the Performing Arts this year. Salix Strings, under the direction of Kathleen Hovey, is an eight-member chamber group playing a variety of string ensemble and chamber music.

Tickets are at Sechelt Visitors Centre and Gaia's Fair Trade in Gibsons. Adults cost $12, students/seniors, $8. Remember to bring a wrap as the evening may get chilly during the 8 p.m. concert. In case of rain, the concert will be held at St. John's United Church in Davis Bay. Call 604-885-7019 the day of the concert for confirmation of venue.

Midsummer portrait

Did some roving photographer take your picture that day? If so, you might appear on Marlene Lowden's exquisite A Midsummer's Day portrait program to be aired on Sunday, June 21 on Coast Cable at the following times: 9 a.m., 12 p.m., 4, 7 and 9. The photos, by numerous local photographers, show a dazzlingly gorgeous Sunshine Coast on a perfect day in summer. The musical accompaniment by local tunesmiths including Joe Stanton and Verna Chan only adds to its charm. Be sure to watch.

The Gibsons Public Art Gallery cordially invites you to an artist's reception on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. for The Art of Wesley Lowe. The show runs to June 27. Lowe is a masterful artist and illustrator who lives on the Coast.

Yuk Yuks

Gibsons Cinema hosts another live stand up comedy night from Yuk Yuks on Saturday at 8 p.m. Tickets and seat reservations are now available online at www.gibsonscinema.ca. New comedians appear at every show. The show is usually a sell out so get your tickets as soon as you can. It's a great laugh.

Aboriginal art

The Egmont Heritage Centre presents an Aboriginal Art Show from June 20 to 30 with a reception for the artists on Monday, June 22 from 4 to 6 p.m. Featured artists include a Coast Salish cedar basket and hat weaver, felt artists, a Sechelt cedar paddle carver and other artists who draw or create beadwork. Art show

The annual art show presented by the Roving Artists will be held in the old library building at 464 S. Fletcher Road in Gibsons from June 26 to 28. Friday and Saturday hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A reception will be held on Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. All are welcome to view the art.

Folk duo

Emma Beaton and Nic Gareiss, folk duo, perform in concert on Friday, June 26 at 7:30 p.m. with doors opening at 7 at a house concert in Roberts Creek.

Their sound has been lauded as "delicate and broken and perfectly sweet." Arranging a mix of traditional and cover songs, with a handful of originals for two voices, banjo, and bouzouki, Beaton and Gareiss' music is rich and harmonious. Beaton, a native of Qualicum Beach, is an accomplished cellist, vocalist, banjo player, and recording artist who recently took home a Canadian Folk Music Award for Young Performer of The Year. She performs with Nic Gareiss, a singer, bouzouki player, and world-renowned dancer from northern Michigan. Tickets for the concert are available by phone at 604-886-4768 for $15.
