Little dancers win big

A group of Gibsons Highland Dancers enjoyed some big wins at the Fraser Valley Highland Dance Association Championship and Open Competition, which took place at the Langley Fine Arts School, Fort Langley from April 30 to May 1.

The dancers are from the Danceworks Academy (www.danceworksacademy.ca) and are taught by Meghan Pike of the Thistlebrook Academy of Highland Dance (thistlebrookacademy.weebly.com).

Natalie Martin was the overall winner in the beginner eight and over category, earning second place in fling, first place in sword, third place in the seann triubhas, first  place in lilt and first place in flora on  Saturday. On Sunday, she moved up to the novice 10 and under category and won second place in the sword, third in the lilt, first  in the flora and first  in the special fling.

Ciana Lowis Holliday, who is five, won second place in pas de Basques, second place in pas de Basques and high-cuts, and second in sword on Saturday. On Sunday she won first place in pas de Basques, second in pas de Basques and high-cuts, and first place in fling and in sword. There is no overall winner prizes in primary.

Other winners were Kayla Quinn Young (seventh in fling for beginner eight and over category), and Johnathan Lowis Holliday (fifth in flora for novice nine and under category).
