Word of Mouth Productions forthcoming play, In Spite of the Booze, written and performed by the very talented Anne Marie Lindell and directed by Scott Harris, weaves music, dance, film and theatre into a study of a young, unmarried expectant mother's attempts to heal her own life, as a new life grows within her.

In Spite of the Booze was designed to be very layered, says Lindell. An exploration of family dynamic and the nature of personal illusion, the play takes its inspiration from Lindell's own relationship with her daughter, Maya. In the process of writing the play, Lindell discovered that the name Maya means illusion and said she feels like her daughter Maya, is the gift that came into her life and helped her shatter through her own illusions and to be in reality.

"The character, Karen, goes through a similar shattering process to re-emerge personally healed, and with her family made whole," Lindell said.

Lindell's is one of the first in a series of original plays written by Sunshine Coast authors that will be produced by Word of Mouth Productions.

"I've just been blown away by the quality of some of the plays that have been coming my way," said Harris, who has been sifting through submissions since putting out a call last year. "It's interesting to me as a director to be doing the first staging, but it's also a little nerve-wracking. It's like singing a song when the composer is sitting in the room next to you. There is a different level of potential input from the author."

In Spite of the Booze opens at Heritage Playhouse, April 23 for a limited run of four performances (April 23, 24, 30 and May 1.) Tickets are $12 at Roberts Creek General Store and at the door.
