The Sunshine Coast Festival of the Written Arts presents Tomboy Survival Guide on Saturday, July 23 at 8 p.m. at the Festival Pavilion, Rockwood Centre in Sechelt.
Tomboy Survival Guide is a live performance experience; it is part anthem, part campfire story and part instructions for the dismantling of gender stories. Storyteller Ivan Coyote and an all-tomboy band (Alison Gorman, Pebbles Willekes and Sally Zori) invite the audience to join them as they navigate the narrow halls of public washrooms, skirt the treachery of growing up under the threat of being picked to be a flower girl at their aunt’s wedding, triumph over tying a double Windsor knot, and discover the beauty in realizing they were handsome, not pretty, all along.
Sunshine Coasters will recognize these performers from their many appearances in the soul/Motown/funk band Queer as Funk. Ivan Coyote has also performed three times at the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Written Arts. Tickets to Tomboy Survival Guide are $20 and available at the Festival of the Written Arts office (5511 Shorncliffe Ave. in Sechelt, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), by calling 604-885-9631, and at www.share-there.com
