This month’s gathering of the Sunshine Coast Quilters Guild, on Saturday, April 30, included the Iron Quilters Challenge. In this fun competition, five teams of five members were tasked with producing a baby quilt, from start to finish, in a designated colour palette and within a four-hour timeframe. The women, wearing colour-coordinated team outfits, set to work in high spirits.
The green team completed their quilt the quickest (Karen Biddlecomb, Sharon Roye, Catherine Brown, Anne Hansen and Jude Grebeldinger). Their completed baby quilt had a binding and a label, and was quilted in just under four hours. The team that completed the first task the fastest was the orange team. They were awarded a small bundle of fat quarters each. Members were Joan Baker, Joan Harvey, Judi Wilson, Jeanette Lucas and Darlene Henry. Winners of the viewers choice award will be decided at the next SCQG resource day. All the quilts will be on display and guild members will have a chance to participate in choosing their favourite quilt. The Team Spirit award went to the Scarlet Scrappers: Carol Bowie, Phyllis Erlenbush, Kim Thompson, Marian Williamson and Anne Gregory.
All finished quilts will be donated to the Sechelt Hospital to be given to newborns. The Guild regularly creates quilts to be donated to community agencies such as Yew Transition House and Victim Services.
The next Quilters Guild resource day is May 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Holy Parish Hall in West Sechelt. The guild's business meeting starts at 11 a.m., at which time the prizes will be awarded. New members are welcome to join. For more information, see www.scquiltersguild.com For more photos, see the gallery at www.coastreporter.net
