Author, teacher and consultant Pamela Proctor presents a panel discussion about Personalized Learning this Saturday, March 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. at The Arts Building, 464 South Fletcher Rd. in Gibsons (next to the library).
The panelists are Proctor, Maurice Gibbons, professor, researcher and writer, and Helen Hughes founder of Windsor House, North Vancouver, along with other educators. Proctor will introduce her new book, Honouring the Child II: a Guide to Ways of Learning for Teachers and Parents, which provides practical information to aid organization and implementation ofpersonalized learning. Panel members will present their experience followed by discussion and questions.
This event will be of particular interest to teachers and parents of children, pre-school to age nine.
Fundraiser for music
The Sunshine Coast Community Orchestra holds its annual garage sale fundraiser this Saturday, March 2, from 10 a.m. to noonat Roberts Creek Elementary School. No music this year, but you can help them do their best to raise funds for the upcoming gala in May.
Met Opera
Wagner's Parsifal is the selection from the Met Opera live from New York via HD satellite on Saturday, March 2, at 9 a.m. at the Raven's Cry Theatre in Sechelt.
Jonas Kaufmann makes his Met role debut as the title character in Parsifal, conducted by Daniele Gatti and directed by noted film and opera director François Girard in his Met debut. Run time is five hours, 40 minutes. The Raven's Cry notes that you are welcome to bring lunch, dinner and a pillow! Tickets: $24 (general) and $20 (senior 65 and over). Cartea Band
The Coast-based Deanna Cartea Band will be hitting the road this March on a tour across Canada.
After a strong showing at Indie Week Canada this past October, the band received notice they had been selected for a coveted spot in the internationally known Canadian Music Week taking place in Toronto.
Cartea released her debut album, Open Road, produced by Ray Fulber at Strait Sound. The album's first single won an Independent Music Award in the alt country category for song of the year, netted Cartea an endorsement deal and got the ears of Nashville-based Memphis Belle Records. The musician has teamed up with local musicians Barry Taylor (drums) and Ken McBride (lead guitar) to form the band. The Tour starts in Gibsons at Boomer's Café in Sunnycrest Mall this Saturday, March 2, with music starting at 8 p.m. Please come out to send the band off in style.
La Bayadere
The Bolshoi Ballet presents La Bayadere via BluRay on Sunday, March 3 at 1 p.m. at the Raven's Cry Theatre. Those who wanted to see this ballet before will know that the Raven's Cry has tried to get this production for some time, but to no avail. Finally it's here and to thank you for your patience the show will be free to the first 274 people who arrive. Natalie Makarova brings a fairytale of fakirs, noble warriors and cruel princesses to the Bolshoi stage. Runtime is approximately three hours with two shortened intermissions.
Figure show
The current show of figurative work at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery features a few "wow" pieces along with an extensive display of the human form from 10 Coast artists. There's sculpture from Jack Gibson, portraits from Noel Silver and character paintings from Jan Poynter, to name a few. The show is on until March 11, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, except Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Rolland in Vancouver?
Sechelt potter Laurie Rolland is part of a ceramics exhibition Turning Forty: The Art of Ceramics at Circle Craft at the Net Loft onGranville Island, Vancouver, from March 1 to April 9. Circle Craft Cooperative Association is presenting the exhibition incelebration of their 40th anniversary.
Rolland has made her living as a potter since graduating with honoursfrom Sheridan College of Ontario in 1978. Rolland'swork can be seen in 17 published books on ceramics and is in private,corporate and public collections around the world.
