The Source Dance Company from Vancouver performs at Raven’s Cry Theatre on Saturday, May 7 in a new production titled Heroes and Heroines.

Vancouver’s The Source Dance Company returns to the Raven’s Cry Theatre for one night only on Saturday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m., with a brand new production titled Heroes and Heroines, featuring a series of dance vignettes from their upcoming full-length summer touring production, Race for Your Life.

Sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Dance Society, this annual event helps to raise much-needed funds for the Dance Society’s scholarship program. Last year, the Society awarded $2,500 to five local dance students, providing helpful assistance for dance training expenses at the pre-professional or recreational level.

Heroes and Heroines is an original dance production, inspired by The Hunger Games movies and CBS’s television show Survivor. Over 30 Source Dance Company dancers will perform as well as select pre-professional level dancers and choreographers from the Sunshine Coast from Dominique’s School of Dance and the Coast Academy of Dance.

Dancers will come together and collide with emotion and high energy using the language of jazz, hip-hop and contemporary dance.

Under the guidance of artistic director Joanne Pesusich, each Source Dance Company dance choreographer was given artistic licence to create a piece, based solely on their own interpretation of the theme. “Through each piece, we see a glimpse of the characters as well as the relationships and competition between the characters … in a fight for their lives,” Pesusich said.

The Source Dance Company is a semi-professional dance company, based out of Harbour Dance Centre in Vancouver, B.C. Dancers from all across Canada make up the company each year, with only a select few chosen at the top of their craft. Pesusich has had 15 successful seasons with the company. Each year, she is amazed at the level of talent that graces the rehearsal studio. She notes that this year’s company is by far the most cohesive, well-rounded company to date.
