Brave Mike
Junco Jan invites anyone interested in participating in Brave Mike 5, exactly five timed minutes in front of a mike, this Friday night, May 16, in Gibsons. You can read from work, sing, recite a poem, list off your loves, do back-flips, you name it. Fun for all, and designed to fit in after the Gibsons Public Market opens on Friday afternoon — so will go from 6 to about 9 p.m. Find your way up the back stairs on the hotel side to the top floor of Gibsons Cinema.

Tandy show
Artist Nadina Tandy of Gibsons is getting ready to show her work in Edmonton’s Bugera Matheson Gallery opening May 23. She is showing with two other artists who represent the title of the show: Heart, Soul, Mind. Tandy represents the mind since the gallery owner described Tandy’s work as thought-provoking, conceptual and abstract.
Great Black North
Frontenac House publishers is thrilled to announce that The Great Black North is a finalist in three categories of the 2014 Alberta Book Publishing Awards: the Scholarly and Academic Book Award, the Education Book Award and the Robert Kroetsch Poetry Book Award. The 2013 book was co-edited by Gibsons writer and editor, Valerie Mason-John. Coast poets Adelene da soul poet and Jean Pierre Makosso are featured. Andrea Superstein
Andrea Superstein sings jazz like she was born in the ‘40s. Hear her sultry sounds at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 25, at the School of Music in Madeira Park. Think Sarah Vaughan meets Betty Boop meets your favourite martini. Superstein was the runaway hit of the 2012 Pender Harbour Jazz Festival, enchanting the 300-plus audience members with a repertoire that spanned almost a century: from old-time 1920s juke joints, to ‘50s doo wop, to contemporary pop tunes.
