The Green Man (aka John Conway) has been invited to present his show proposal to the Dragon's Den show on CBC TV at the end of this month in Toronto. The Green Man needs our help to get to the film studios in Toronto and his many fans are holding a fundraiser this Friday night, April 12, at the Roberts Creek Legion. Tickets are $5 for members and $10 non-members at the door. Donations are welcome.
Sailing Show
Sailor Gillie Hutchinson will be holding a LadySail presentation about her adventures on Desolation Sound and Croatia this Saturday, April 13, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Gibsons Library. It promises to be a fun and informative event with slideshows, raffle, coffee and cake.
String
A Bit More String plays music on Saturday, April 13, at 7:30 p.m. (doors at 7) at the Coopers Green Hall, Halfmoon Bay. Kaia Nelson (string bass) and Mark Lebbell (guitar) call their music Canadicana, drawing inspiration from non-traditional roots cover tunes. Their repertoire includes tales of trucks and trains, love lost and found, bears and leaf blowers, all held together with little bits of string. Together with Ken Dalgleish (keys) and Graham Walker (drums), they make up a Bigger Bits of String Band, and always deliver an evening of harmony, humour and hip-shaking grooves. Pamela Proctor, author of Honouring the Child: Changing Ways of Teaching,will lead a session on Ways to Personalize Learning at the Gibsons Public Art Galleryon Sunday, April 14, from 2 to 4 p.m.and present her new handbook, Honouring the Child II: A Guide to Ways of Learning, for teachers and parents.
Spanish through art
Family Spanish Through Art is a two-part workshop to be held on two Sundays, April 14 and 28, from 10 a.m. to noon in Sunnycrest Mall, Gibsons. These fun and engaging Beginner Spanish workshops are designed for kids with their parents or for adults with a sense of humour. The language will be taught through art, play and participation. A Beginner Spanish Learning Basic Kit is required and can be purchased when you sign up. The workshop cost is $30/person or $110/family of four, plus kit. Felting workshop
Fibre artist Ursula Bentz will be giving three workshops in felting starting this Saturday, April 13, at her home studio at 499 Marine Dr. in Gibsons. Creek creative
Creative in the Creek returns to the Gumboot Café in Roberts Creek on Thursday, April 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is by donation. By popular demand, Gerri Hills returns to continue the story of recreating her Métis family. David Roche continues the tale of his ongoing physical deterioration. Other delightful surprises come from your creative friends and neighbours.
Poetry Month
To celebrate National Poetry Month, three B.C. poets will read by the sea: Janet Vickers, Gabriola Island poet with a new book, Impermanence; Heidi Greco, previous Surrey poet-in-residence, an expert at seeing the extraordinary in the daily grind; and Gibsons' new bardette, Marion Quednau, the 2012 Canada Writes Poetry People's Choice. Hear them at Swish, #309 - 287 Gower Point Rd. in Gibsons on Thursday, April 18. Admission is free. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., so grab a seat overlooking the harbour, and take a surprising tour of the senses. This event is sponsored by the Canada Council and the League of Canadian Poets.
Festival first week
There was a great turnout for the April 7 Piano Encore Concert at the Art Centre where award winners in the Festival of the Performing Arts played their winning pieces before receiving their award medallions.Several young pianists won their first awards following the first week of the festival. Those receiving cash prizes will be performing and accepting those awards at the Festival 2013 Highlights Concert coming up at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 28, at Raven's Cry Theatre, Sechelt.
Blues band
Looking for a great way to celebrate Earth Day and our big blue planet? Dance to the Vancouver Island sensation, Renovation Blues Band, on Saturday, April 20, at Roberts Creek Hall. Doors open at 8.30, soul renovation starts at 9 p.m. with those deep-rooted Chicago-style blues, swingin' grooves, shufflin' beats and funky rhythms.
