Janyk and Davis

Opening Wednesday, May 20, and running through Sunday, June 14, the Doris Crowston Gallery at the SC Arts Centre presents recent work by Katie Janyk entitled Marking Time and by John Davis of recent photographs of firefighters and their work. Ceramic artist Janyk operates Salamander Studio at her home in Gibsons. She has created delicate porcelain vessels and plates, stoneware sculpture, burnished vessels in the Nigerian and early American traditions, raku and smoke-fired masks, and colourful earthenware tiles. Marking Time examines connections between past and present, and the nature of time's passing.

Davis's photographic exhibition of firefighters arises from his hope that they will increase public awareness of the important work our local volunteer firefighters do to protect us. Canvas prints of photos for sale will benefit the Sechelt volunteer fire department. The artist has worked in many media in the visual arts but in the last eight years he has turned his passion to photography, his favourite, and the most fun form of art he's ever known. The opening reception is on Wednesday, May 20, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Arts Centre.
