Boomers band
Boomers Burger Bar presents an evening of live music and lobster on Saturday, Oct. 12. Music comes from local jazz funk band The Organics and the lobster comes fresh from the Atlantic. Reservations are recommended (604-886-1646) for the dinner and music package with 10 per cent from each meal donated to Good to Go meals on wheels. Singers needed
A temporary choir, the Coast Christmas Choir, has formed and will perform the first segment of Handel's Messiah as well as three choruses from the Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten. The group rehearses Saturdays from 2 to 4 p.m. at St. John's United Church in Davis Bay. Singers for any voice are welcomed. No experience is required. The fee of $70 covers rehearsal space, musical scores and other costs. A concert to wrap up the season is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 20. The author of An Indian Sojourn, Ellen Besso, and the book's photographer, Don Smith, offer a reading and slide show at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery in Gibsons this Saturday, Oct. 12, from 7 to 8:30. Come out to hear about an intriguing spiritual journey.
Dance Thriller
Thrill the World is an annual worldwide attempt to break the largest simultaneous dance record by performing Michael Jackson's Thriller. Thousands of people in cities around the world will learn Thriller and perform it together on Oct. 26. The event was created for the enjoyment of dance and also so each venue could raise money for a local charity. Thrill the World will be held at exactly the same moment all over the world - in Gibsons at 2 p.m. sharp at Kenmac Auto parking lot. Last year 9,650 zombies at 181 events in 21 countries took part. On the Coast we mustered 50 zombies. Rehearsals begin now, or you can go online to www.thrilltheworld.com where you will find the video along with scripts. Donations will be taken at the first rehearsal or at the event registration. The Coast charity will be the community theatre, the Heritage Playhouse. Artworks Gallery and Framing in Sechelt is pleased to present Canadian Artist Wendy Tosoff, who is exhibiting a collection of toys and animals that capture colour, detail and character of adorable friends and companions. Artworks, located at 5685 Cowrie St., will be featuring the work during October and November.
Banana culture
Dr. Anna Freud Banana will be mapping banana culture on the Sunshine Coast during the Sechelt Festival of the Arts. Dr. Banana will receive your stories, jokes, nicknames, traditions, travel tales and pictures, at many locations, dates and times. All collected banana material will be posted, along with choice items from her 43-year study of pop culture bananas, in her display in the Seaside Centre during the festival. This is a one-time opportunity to have your banana his/story registered in the Encyclopedia Bananica project, where topics range from bananas in art, advertising, cartoons, fashion, humour, jokes, law, literature, music, show business and "slanguage." The first banana collection points are on Fri., Oct. 18, and Sun., Oct. 20, Seaside Centre from noon to 3 p.m. and on Sat., Oct. 19, at Trail Bay Centre, noon to 3 p.m. Further dates and locations for bananaphiles will be reported in this newspaper.

101 art
For October and November, 101 Office Supply is displaying acrylic paintings by Jone Pane, active member of the local arts community for many years. The canvasses on display are large studies exploring motion in the context of Eastern movement and meditation practices, taken from her show Action, which opened at the GPAG this August. 101 Office Supply is on Cowrie Street in Sechelt.
Quilt on show
Artist James Miller makes provocative art. One work in that category is his quilt, Death from A to Z by Adam Lanza, December 14, 2012, in which a bib commemorates each child slain during the Sandy Hook massacre. It was refused for showing in the Coast's Quilters' Guild Show and first accepted and later rejected by the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show in Oregon for its sensitive content. It now languishes in a box rather than being displayed so people can see it and think about how gun control laws might be changed in the U.S. A number of groups have been formed since the tragic killings in Sandy Hook. Sandy Hook Promise (sandyhookpromise.org) and Moms Demand Action http://momsdemandaction.org have a more straightforward focus on gun control, urging supporters to pressure politicians to restrict weapons access. Miller plans to use the fundraising website indie.gogo.com to raise funds to help him travel to Sandy Hook, CN to display the quilt on the first anniversary of the shootings. Correction
In my article about Les Fowler's musical contribution to the Coast, I wrote that the Harbour Lights Band "later transformed into the Roberts Creek Big Band." According to musicians, Roberts Creek Big Band was started in 1997 - a number of years before the Harbour Lights Band folded. Several musicians played in both bands concurrently.
