Langdale Elementary School on the Sunshine Coast has been running an extra-curricular creative arts Glee Club for the last five years. This program, funded by the Langdale PAC, and initiated, organized and facilitated by parent volunteers, has been propelled by the energy and enthusiasm of participating grades 4 to 7 students. Originally a singing group, the annual performances have expanded into solo and duet instrumentals, dancing, acting and musical numbers.
“We thought providing an opportunity for students with an established interest in the performing arts, as well as those who might not otherwise engage in traditional arts instruction, was important. It has given many children (typically more than 20 kids per year) the chance to express themselves in an open, supportive, freely creative, and organic way as performers, directors, choreographers, and creators. For others, the Glee Club is a chance to simply support the arts through technical roles in sound, lighting, and set design.”
Maggie Scott and Lisa Tallon have found facilitating the ever changing group over the years a greatly rewarding experience, demanding both flexibility and a touch of faith. “Each year, as we approach the big day, we feel we’re running on a hope and a prayer, held together by scotch tape! But every year, the kids bring their best efforts to the stage and shine!”
This year’s Glee performance will be held at the Langdale Elementary School gym on June 17 at 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 1:15 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. respectively.
