The Coast Recital Society (CRS) opens its stellar 2011/12 concert season on Saturday afternoon at the Raven's Cry Theatre in Sechelt with a recital by the brilliant Russian/Israeli pianist Boris Giltburg.
The concert begins at 2:30 p.m., with a pre-concert chat with Giltburg at 1:30.
Born in Moscow, Giltburg has lived in Tel Aviv since early childhood. He has received many awards at international competitions, notably top prizes at the 2002 Santander and 2011 Artur Rubinstein competitions. He made his BBC Proms debut in 2010 with rave reviews from the London critics.
"This young musician combines virtuosity with poetry, and our audience will find this recital exceptional," said CRS artistic director Frances Heinsheimer Wainwright.
"In his Canadian debut, Boris Giltburg will perform Franz Liszt's monumental Piano Sonata, in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of Liszt's birth, as well as works by Prokofiev, Franck and Bartók - without a doubt, a brilliant opener to our new season."
Giltburg has given recitals across Europe in major venues such as the Amsterdam Concert-gebouw, Vienna Konzerthaus, Paris Louvre, and London's Wigmore Hall. Festival appearances have included the Klavierfest am Ruhr, Schwetzingen and Lucerne.
Future concerts in this new CRS season feature soprano Isabelle Bayakdarian with pianist Serouj Kradjian, St. Lawrence String Quartet, Pentaèdre Wind Quintet, Vancouver Chamber Choir and pianist Andre Laplante.
