Two Gibsons residents recently enjoyed successful book launches. Tony Richmond, author of Silviba: A Forester’s Log, and Jody Cox, author of A Better Way: Your Guide to Abundant Health, both published their books in the fall of 2015 and were delighted with how their books were received.
Richmond’s book Silviba is an entertaining and intriguing story of his life as a Canadian forester; he turned 82 in May and has many years to look back on. The stories of his adventures are colourful and lively, but there is a darker side as Richmond exposes the mistreatment of First Nations peoples whose timber was stolen without compensation in the homesteading years.
Last month, Richmond was invited to Prince Alberta, Sask., to hold a book launch party, with the net proceeds going to the Prince Albert Women’s Shelter. “In all my years working in northern Saskatchewan, I saw a lot of family breakdown, and I always thought if I ever won the lottery I’d donate half the money to the women’s shelter,” Richmond said.
In part four of his book, Richmond puts forward a case for revising public forest administration both in B.C. and Saskatchewan. The major feature is to put forestry back in the hands of the communities.
Richmond’s book launch on the Coast is on Sunday Jan. 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. at 3303 Beach Ave. in Roberts Creek, with a reading at 2 p.m.

Jody Cox is a local chiropractor who last year set out to write a book to show people how they can have abundant health and live life to the fullest. “The reason I wrote A Better Way is because I saw the need to help people who are looking for a solution amidst the confusion on what to do when it comes to living healthy – not just ‘getting by,’ but really experiencing life fully alive,” Cox said. “I packed it full of ‘make sense’ steps, backed by science, on what you can do immediately, and even created a recipe section to help get you started.”
As soon as A Better Way launched on Amazon, it became the No. 1 best seller in the chiropractic books category. The book has had sales as far away as the U.K., Denmark and Australia. Cox also held a week-long book launch event in her clinic in Gibsons, and they sold out of books on the second day. In fact, they’ve sold out three times. She commented, “I had no idea there would be so much support from my community, and was grateful for the overwhelming response and encouragement.”
Both books are available locally at Talewind Books in Sechelt and on Amazon.ca. Cox’s book is also available at New Hope Chiropractic in Gibsons.
