The Doucetrio, a fresh group of young, enthusiastic people, will appear at the Gumboot Café on Saturday, June 27, at 7:30 p.m. Local artists, Stramash, will open the night. Stramash features Emily Wood on piano and bass, Henry Wood on saxophone and fiddle and Graeme McGillivray on guitar.

Based out of Edmonton, Doucetrio is intent on exploring music in all its forms. The trio of Yannick Doucet, James Law (Coast String Fiddler alumnus) and Mike McCormick met while attending Grant MacEwan College's music program and soon discovered each other's passion for music. Coming from three completely different backgrounds, they each bring their own experiences and tastes to their performances, drawing from the realms of jazz, funk, avant-garde and world music. Donations at the door.

Just Jen

Pender Harbour Jazz Festival fans will remember volunteer Jenny Rucker who used to knit a sweater of distinctive design every year to be raffled as a fundraiser and who organized various artisans' shows in Madeira Park. Rucker (now Jenny Cooke) writes from her grand isolation of Minstrel Island where she works as a lodge-keeper, postmaster and baker, among other jobs. The tourist season is short there, she writes, since the island does not offer deep water moorage. She's still being creative, however, and though her 18-year career as a knitter is over, she has found a new passion. Just Jen Originals has produced a number of hand-bound Perpetual Flowers calendar books. Since she has no e-mail (no TV or fax either) you can drop her a line at Box 1, Cooke Landing, Minstrel Island, B.C. V0P 1L0.
