The Sunshine Coast Festival of the Written Arts is pleased to announce the addition of a free community event to the festival line-up featuring Sunshine Coast resident Jerry Thompson.

Thompson's book, Cascadia's Fault, looks at the Cascadia subduction zone, a crack in the earth's crust located about 50 km offshore, running from the tip of Vancouver Island to Northern California. The book examines not only the science and the consequences of a major earthquake, but also the planning that is being done to help coastal communities manage and survive a major earthquake.

Sunshine Coast Regional District emergency program co-ordinator Bill Elsner will join Thompson for an onstage conversation. The event will be hosted and moderated by Sean Eckford, news director of CKAY-FM, who plays an integral role in the local emergency communications protocol.

The event will get underway at 11:45 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 7, in the Festival Pavilion at the Rockwood Centre in Sechelt. Opportunity for questions and discussion will follow the event at 12:30 p.m.
