FOG covers the Coast

The Sunshine Coast Arts Council starts off the year with their annual Friends of the Gallery (FOG) Exhibit. The criteria are simple: be a member of the Sunshine Coast Arts Council and submit a work created during the previous year. Last year 91 different Coast artists participated in the event with submissions representing a wide breadth of mediums and forms. Interested in being part of the Exhibition? Come to the Arts Centre, Sunday, Jan. 3 between the hours of 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. with one work completed during 2015. The exhibition runs from Wednesday, Jan. 6 to Feb. 7. The opening reception is on Wednesday, Jan. 6 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Doris Crowston Gallery, in the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre, 5714 Medusa St., Sechelt. Singing for Team Canada

Jada McKenzie Moore is a 15-year-old singer returning to the Coast during the Christmas season to be with family. She will be performing at nearly a dozen private events including the Halfmoon Bay General Store on Christmas Day to raise money for an important trip where she will represent Team Canada, competing as a vocalist. After auditioning for the 2016 World Championship of Performing Arts she was accepted as a member of Team Canada to compete in the vocal and acting categories in Long Beach, California on July 8 to 17, 2016. The Championship is a talent Olympics for aspiring performers and entertainers with over 50 countries participating.

New Year’s Eve

The Railtown Sound System (reggae, roots) is preparing to raise the vibrations for NYE with guests The Funkdealer (funk, hip hop, electro, classic rock), Three Foot Kick (punk infused heavy rock), and Robby Luvdub at the Roberts Creek Legion. There will be champagne at midnight and late night snacks to help you maintain made by Legion chef Dylan. The Legion will be open until 3 a.m. The evening looks like this: 9 to 10 p.m. - Robby Luv Dub; 10 to 11 p.m. - Three Foot Kick; 11 to 11:30 p.m. - The Funkdealer; 11:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. - Railtown Sound System; 1 to 3 a.m. - The Funkdealer.

Tickets are $15 for members / $30 for guests with members on sale now at the RC Legion during business hours.

NYE Gibsons

At the Gibsons Legion on New Year’s Eve choose from two great bands. New Year’s tickets are on sale now at the Legion. Members are $25, Guests $30. Playback rocks the Lounge and the Marwills on their tour perform in the Hall. Doors open at 8 p.m. and price includes snacks and champagne toast. The Royal Canadian Legion is at 747 Gibsons Way.

Piano hero

CBCMusic.ca and IciMusique.ca are once again inviting all amateur classical pianists to enter the second edition of the popular contest, Piano Hero. Regardless of age or level, pianists may submit videos of themselves performing a piece of classical music, beginning on Monday, Jan. 11. This year, the winning contestant will receive a Steinway-designed Boston professional upright piano, plus a trip for two to Montreal from April 21 – 24, 2016. The trip will include a private lesson with award-winning pianist David Jalbert and other rewards. Full competition rules, details and prize information are available at cbcmusic.ca/pianohero.
