For the second year, residents in the Sechelt area will be able to enjoy a program of fine Canadian and international films without having to drive to Gibsons.
Following a successful pilot project last year, the Sunshine Coast Film Society has expanded its program to Sechelt, offering six showings this fall and winter.
"We are now starting our 13th year showing alternative films in the community," said Sechelt film coordinator Karyn Burney.
Up until last year, when a test pilot program was presented in Sechelt, all the films were shown at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons. The pilot program, organized by Burney and held at Sechelt Seniors' Activity Centre, was deemed a success, attracting audiences of 50 to 75 people.
Burney noted that the Sechelt venue has been improved, with a Blue-Ray player and other technical upgrades, raising it to a professional standard.
The film society is a non-profit organization formed in 2001 with some 40 volunteers and strongly supported by sponsors in the Coast business community.
Basic membership is $20. A $99 membership gives access to all films plus two single-event guest passes. Ticket prices are $5 for regular members and single event tickets are $9. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Mondays in Gibsons and at 2 p.m. Sundays in Sechelt.
In conjunction with the Film Society, the Green Film Series concerning sustainability and environmental issues will be shown in Gibsons only.
