A Valentine’s dinner/dance at Roberts Creek Hall on Saturday, Feb. 10 is a fundraiser for the Sunshine Coast Filipino-Canadian Association. Also on Saturday night, Feb. 10, there’s a Valentine’s Dance at Gibsons Legion. Music with Half Cut and the Slackers starts at 8 p.m. Bring your sweetheart and get down to dance hits from the ’50s to the ’80s.
Chocolate and Flowers
Valentine’s Day must be on its way. Sunnycrest Mall in Gibsons is offering a day by the name of Chocolat that showcases handmade chocolates and truffles along with live music, flowers and art from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10.

Art Series
The Raven’s Cry Theatre, (5555 Sunshine Coast Highway, Sechelt) presents In the Gallery, an art film series that begins on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. Canaletto and the Art of Venice tells of the life and art of Venice’s master view painter, Giovanni Antonio Canal, or Canaletto. Contra Dance
Dancer Deborah Pageau writes that Contra Dance is coming on Saturday, Feb. 10, 7 to 10 p.m. in the Common House of Roberts Creek co-housing, 1131 Emery Rd. Caller Maureen Collier is coming from Vancouver for this fun event. Contra dance is a modern, upbeat version of Celtic set dancing, an ancestor of ballroom dancing. Couples progress together down facing lines of couples, using standard figures such as swing and allemande. All dances are taught and the caller cues the dancers as the dance progresses. Contra dancing is moderate exercise to traditional music that a family can enjoy together. A school-aged child can partner with a parent. Admission: adults $12, children 12 and under $5.
Hopscotch
Award winning singer/songwriter Katrina Bishop has just released a new recording, Hopscotch, and she will bring her talents to the School of Music in Madeira Park on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. She mixes pop, jazz and musical theatre while playing both piano and guitar. The songs on Hopscotch are a healthy mix of the singer’s background in pop, funk, musical theatre, jazz, a cappella and, yes, a little country. Her lyrics play with an equally diverse cross-section of topics, including wine and cheese, rockets, sociopaths, regret, parenting on a bad day, math, sex, cowboys and housework. The whole package is tied together with generous harmonies, catchy hooks, intuitive arrangements and her stellar band. Ulrich in Gibsons
Heritage Playhouse Productions is pleased to present Shari Ulrich in Concert at the Heritage Playhouse (North Road and the Highway, Gibsons) on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 advance, available at Laedeli Gifts and Cards, the Sechelt Visitor Centre or online at share-there.com, and $25 at door. Ulrich celebrates 43 years as a touring recording artist and multi-instrumentalist (violin, mandolin, piano, guitar, dulcimer and harmonica). From Pied Pumkin through The Hometown Band and on as a solo artist and multi-instrumentalist has led to 23 albums – including her collaboration with solo artists Bill Henderson and Roy Forbes (UHF), Barney Bentall and Tom Taylor (BTU), and more recently The High Bar Gang, a seven-piece bluegrass band. Her work has garnered two Juno awards and nominations, an induction into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame, and a 2014 CFMA for English Songwriter of the Year. Tickets are selling quickly.
Sensual Words
On Monday, Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. local authors will present their take on the sensual theme in a reading at Zócalo, sponsored by One Flower One Leaf Gallery. Expect words of great passion from writers David Kipling, Richard Austin, Janice Williams, PJ Reece, William Baker and yours truly, Jan DeGrass. Love Tales

Chocolates and Love
Sechelt Library is also celebrating Valentine’s Day. On Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 1:30 p.m. you can try chocolate tasting with chocolatier John Down of Christopher Norman Chocolates. On Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. be there for Love Me True with writers Andreas Schroeder and Kara Stanley, and musician Simon Paradis. Coffee, desserts and sweet literary and musical treats included. Young People
The annual Young People’s Own Show is currently on at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre, Sechelt. Until Feb. 11 you can see the delightful art work of a selection of Sunshine Coast elementary schools. From Feb. 14 to March 4 the work of Coast secondary schools will be on display. Participating elementary schools include Kinnikinnick Elementary, Davis Bay/Nest, Pender Harbour Community School and the Spider Program. The work ranges from felting to Modigliani style pastels to paint, collage and wood carving. The secondary school exhibition will include work from Chatelech and Pender Harbour Secondary, the Sunshine Coast Alternative School and the work of the next wave of Sunshine Coast artists. Mad Park Bistro in the Harbour Spirit Centre in Madeira Park is bringing back music to Pender Harbour on Sundays. The Federation of BC Writers and the Sechelt Library wants your best short story to share with the community at the Sechelt Library on April 5.
