Europe is calling — and your Coast Symphony Orchestra will be answering with the musical words of Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert and Bizet on Sunday, May 31 at the Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt. Led by artistic director Edette Gagné, the members of the CSO will bring the best of Europe and the Sunshine Coast together for an unforgettable afternoon of music. Come for a pre-concert chat at 2 p.m.; concert starts at 2:30 p.m.
Opening with the Egmont Overture, the walls of the Raven’s Cry Theatre will be vibrating with the intensity that only Beethoven could bring to music inspired by a tragic play by Goethe.
Following this rousing introduction to the afternoon, Hanna Crudele will be the featured soloist in Mozart’s Violin Concerto no. 3. The orchestra accompanies this talented Sunshine Coast grade 12 student.
After intermission, the orchestra returns to its full complement of instruments, performing a less than fully complete late-Classical symphony, Franz Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony, his eighth in B minor. What it lacks in a third movement, it makes up for in memorable melodies, nearly Romantic harmonies, and richly textured orchestration.
Rounding out the program is the second of George Bizet’s L’Arlésienne suites. From the lilting Pastorale, to the tender Menuetto and the rousing Farandole, the Coast Sym-phony Orchestra is sure to leave you wanting more.
