The splendid early-music ensemble Cappella Artemisia makes their Coast Recital Society (CRS) debut this Sunday, Oct. 28, at 2:30 p.m. at the Raven's Cry Theatre in Sechelt, with a pre-concert chat at 1:30.
Founded in Bologna, Italy in 1991 under the direction of Candace Smith, Cappella Artemisia is a 10-member ensemble consisting of six singers and two cornetti, plus viola da gamba and organ.
Dedicated to performing music composed by nuns in 16th and 17th century Italian convents, the repertoire of Cappella Artemisia includes both forgotten works composed by the nuns themselves, as well as music intended for performance within the hidden walls of convents by better-known male composers, but performed by Cappella Artemisia as it would originally have been heard, i.e., without male voices.
Since its inception the ensemble has received critical and popular praise, both for the rarity and originality of its repertoire and for the high quality of its performances.
They have appeared at such prestigious venues as the Festival of Flanders, Holland Festival of Early Music, Festival Monteverdiano di Cremona and Rome's Concerti al Quirinale. Their CRS concert is part of a Canadian tour that includes performances in B.C., Alberta and Yukon.
The musicians of Cappella Artemisia are all established performers in the field of early music and actively collaborate with major early-music ensembles in North America and Europe.
Performing with Cappella Artemisia will be Bruce Dickey, who is recognized internationally as the doyen of the modern generation of cornett players.
