Bluff Hollow

Bluff Hollow Art Works is holding an open house this Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at their indoor/outdoor galleries in Garden Bay.

Ann and Rick Harmer each create unique art forms: Ann uses local mushrooms to dye fibre, which she turns into handspun yarns. With mushroom colours, silk scarves become vibrant wearable art. Rick creates lightweight concrete wall and garden art, displayed on a natural rock bluff.

See what the concretist and the mushroomist have been up to at 5027 Bear Bay Rd. - directions at bluffhollow.ca or phone 604-883-3678. (Because of Bluff Hollow's unique topography, the property is not wheelchair accessible.)

Poetry

The Gibsons Live Poets Society presents B.C. poet Miranda Pearson this Saturday, May 11, at 7 p.m. in the Gibsons Public Art Gallery. This is the last reading in the spring series.

Pearson's poetry has been published widely in literary journals and anthologies, including the recent Forcefield, Women Poets of British Columbia. Her first collection, Prime, was published in 2001.

The Aviary (2006, Ooli-chan Books) was awarded the Alfred G. Bailey prize. Her latest book, Harbour (Oolichan) was short-listed for the 2010 BC Book Prize for poetry. This reading is sponsored by the Canada Council for the Arts and the Sunshine Coast Credit Union and is free to the public.

Harbour win

The Coast's Harbour Publishing has been awarded the Hubert Evans Non-Fiction prize at this year's B.C. Book Prizes announced at the gala on May 4, for an account of the NDP's Dave Barrett years, The Art of the Impossible, written by Geoff Meggs and Rod Mickleburgh.

Source show

The Source Dance Com-pany put on a riveting, high-energy dance performance last weekend at the Raven's Cry Theatre. This troupe of professional dancers from Vancouver featured a few memorable pieces that involved tap, ballet, hip hop and contemporary. Source alumna Sammie Broomhall was excellent and the four pre-professional dancers studying at the Coast Academy of Dance held up well to any comparison with the more experienced dancers. Sorry, no photo is available -their action was so high speed and crisp that it couldn't be captured on camera.
