Canadian playwright Peter Colley's I'll Be Back Before Midnight has been described as the most popular stage play in Canadian history.

It has been produced in more than a score of countries, in almost every American state and certainly in every Canadian province.

Under Gibsons-based professional actor/director David Hurtubise, Driftwood Players' version of this black-humoured psychological thriller is currently in rehearsal and set to open March 3 at Gibsons' venerable Heritage Playhouse. With chills, thrills and surprises all the way, Midnight promises a suspenseful and entertaining run, ably delivered by a small but talented production crew and a cast of experienced actors.

A creepy, purportedly haunted rural farmhouse is the setting in which a young couple attempt to rebuild their ailing marriage, while the troubled young wife Jan (played by Melina Cassidy) struggles with the recovery and aftermath of a nervous disorder. Her efforts aren't aided by the appearance of husband Greg's scheming and libidinous sister Laura and the presence of a somewhat manic neighbour, George. Greg is played by Todd Alain, Laura by Elisa Jardine and farmer George by Ian Banks - none of whom are strangers to the Sunshine Coast stage.

Scares and surprises come in rapid succession throughout the production, which ends with a horrifying edge-of-the-seat climax likely to leave audiences wondering whether anyone will get out alive.

I'll Be Back Before Midnight opens at Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons at 8 p.m., March 3, with doors opening at 7:30. The run continues through March 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 17, 18 and 19, with a matinée scheduled for March 5 at 2 p.m. Ticket sales outlets and prices to be announced.
