Last Monday, millions of people around the world welcomed the year of the powerful water dragon, one of the creatures on the 12-year Chinese zodiac cycle. This year's water dragon is a mighty symbol promising change and, many hope, prosperity. The Chinese new year, as it is known, opened on Jan. 23 and festivities continue until Feb. 6.
On the Coast some members and friends of the Asian-inspired New Moon Society will try their luck with the dragon and celebrate the lunar new year on Sunday, Feb. 5 in Roberts Creek with events that include drumming, Qi Gong, calligraphy and a potluck feast.
"The intention of having a celebration is to build community with past volunteers and new members," said organizer Joah Lui.
Joyce Chong, also an organizer, leads a Taiko drumming workshop from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the Dojo on Roberts Creek Road. It's open to ages 10 and up with no fee, but participants must register in advance as the Dojo has limited space. Phone Joyce at 604-740-8094.
Lui will lead a Qi Gong healing workout from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m. for all ages and abilities in the Co-housing Common House in Roberts Creek. Lui has developed a daily practice in this branch of Chinese medicine that she describes as more of a spiritual psychology.
"It's part of my ancestry and my heritage," said Lui. "It is helpful to all even if you're not in the best of health."
No registration is necessary but parking is limited. Organizers ask that guests park in the cul de sac at the entrance to Co-Housing.
From 4:30 to 7 p.m. the community is invited to a potluck dinner. Bring a dish, preferably on an Asian theme.
"Last year we made the dinner all ourselves," remembers Lui, and the organizers quickly realized that a potluck was the answer this year. If you would like to attend, drop an e-mail to [email protected] to let her know and she will give you directions to the potluck location.
You can also listen to Taiko drumming and try your hand at Chinese calligraphy using traditional inks and brushes. If you anticipate a challenging year or want to engender peace in the world, you might try and copy a short poem onto a scroll, then take it home to post on your wall to manifest your hopes for the year.
The New Moon Society is building on smaller events such as this, Lui said, rather than the larger annual festivals that took place in the past. It suits the energy of the board right now and it also gives a more intimate connection between the Asian community and the Coast. All are welcome to attend.
