GPAG show
Amelia Epp's multi-mediaexhibition, Remnants: Strained, Stained and Stitched, opens at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery with an artist's reception on Saturday at 2 p.m. All are invited.
GPAG has other interesting shows planned for the future. Shout Out, Young People's Art will open in March and the gallery is calling for submissions on the theme of water from kids ages two to 18 by the deadline date of March 4. I'll have more about this later. Check this column for more about an exciting year-end exhibition: a Tribute to Leonard Cohen.
Plato concert
Karin Plato, a Juno-nominated jazz vocalist, Steve Giltrow on guitar and Jon Bentley, bass and sax, present an evening of jazz standards and a few surprises at a house concert in Roberts Creek on Saturday at 7 p.m. - outstanding musicians, engaging music, an intimate setting, shared goodies and an opportunity to mingle with the musicians following the concert. Arts Building
The tattered silk tones of Deanna Cartea meet toe-tapping, thigh-slapping, hand-clapping music of the Billy Hillpickers as The Arts Building in Gibsons presents Cartea and the Hillpickers at the second musical coffee house evening on Saturday.Once again Jacqueline will have an offering of her sublime treats. Doors open at 7:30 and music begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at the door for $10 (kids under 12 are $5).

Nutcracker
Dancer Kathleen Holmes has confirmed that an annual full production of the perennial Christmas favourite, The Nutcracker, will be produced here on the Coast this coming Christmas. A meeting will be held at the Heritage Playhouse on Sunday, Feb. 12, from 10 a.m. to noon, open to all interested parties who would like to hear and learn more. Special free-standing sets and scenic elements have been designed to local theatre specifications. Thetwo-act production will feature local artists as well as guests.Negotiations are taking place with the costume department of the Boston Ballet to supply the multitude of specialized costumes required. Hanscom show
The Sunshine Coast Arts Council presents the second exhibition in its schedule from Feb. 15 to March 11: Jay Hanscom's The Vulture, The Lootand The Anvil. Hanscom has built his show "around the gallery space, taking advantageof each strength."
He sees each exhibition as an installation, makingdecisions about the use of space that brings the viewer into a moreintimate experience of the work.Hanscom, who currently lives inVictoria, will bring mixed media drawings on paper and a series oflarge-scale mixed media and resin pieces on wood box frames.
There will be an opening reception on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m.
Writers' Cafés
On Thursday, Feb. 16, at 7:30 p.m. at the Arts Building is the second in a series of Writers' Cafés. This event brings local writers together to readtheir own material. In the line-up are: Junco Jan, Janet Hodgkinson, Martha Royea, Ross Harry, Sheila Weaver and others. Tea and treats are available in the kiosk during thisfun, informal and supportive evening. Robb art
For the month of February, 101 Office Supply in Sechelt is showing paintings by Monica Robb. A longtime resident of the Sunshine Coast, she has had a number of local solo exhibits as well as showing with the original St. Bart's group and the Roving Artists. For this show she has chosen a number of earlier works, from portraiture to scenery.
