Dance to the Majestic Project

Art Beat

DSdanse Youth Dance Company performs The Majestic Project at the Heritage Playhouse, Gibsons, on Friday, April 14 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, April 15 at 2 p.m. The first half is a dance performance and the second half is a 25-minute message in dance and multi-media about the beauty of our front yard, the ocean, and the need to protect it.

Artistic director Dominique Hutchinson writes that: “The Majestic Project is the project I am the most proud of in my 24 years of working with kids on the Coast: sixteen young women, ages 10 to 18, choreographing, reflecting and using dance as a self-expression in order to create a message of awareness. We understand the importance of this ocean and all its inhabitants: whales, dolphins, seals, herons, salmon, eagles … My vision as the director was to create an empowering message, so we can talk about it openly without having the feeling we are politicizing our children.”

Tickets are at Laedeli Gifts in Gibsons and online at share-there.com, or call 604-886-0020.

Ed Hill

Artist Ed Hill writes: “Many years ago I had the opportunity to meet one of America’s foremost photo journalists. Lester Picker and I have since become friends … Some time ago he asked me to participate in writing an e-book with him on the subject of artistic composition. It’s included in his website as one of his many books and tutorials. His idea was to teach about composition from the perspective of both a painter and a photographer. I found the exercise most interesting in that both of our disciplines are so similar. Our ‘tools’ are different. It was an honour to be invited to work with Lester and I think the book we produced has value for both artists and photographers.”

To see the book, go to www.lesterpickerphoto.com/shop and look for Artistic Composition.
