Dance for Chelsea's Charity

Chelsea Robinson was attending university in Victoria to become an elementary school teacher when her life was cut short by a tragic fire. Inspired by Chelsea's love of children and her generous and energetic spirit, family and friends got together to form Chelsea's Charity. The fledgling society perpetuates Chelsea's dream of making a positive difference in children's lives by buying school supplies for those in need, sponsoring sports teams and doing whatever it can - big and small - to support the aspirations of Sunshine Coast children.

On Saturday, Sept. 13, the Live Music Society is hosting a benefit dance for Chelsea's Charity at the Roberts Creek Hall. Musical guests are Gary Comeau and the Voodoo Allstars, providing New Orleans-style rockin' roots and blues.

Singer-songwriter Gary Comeau was born and raised in Nova Scotia, but the Georgia Straight calls him the "most southern-sounding player" in Vancouver. The Island Folk Festival Review calls his hot and spicy musical stylings a blend of Maritime Acadian, Louisiana zydeco blues and Highway 61-era Bob Dylan. Although sometimes labelled zydeco or Cajun, Comeau said, "It's just the vibe that runs through the tunes I write."

With great showmanship, Comeau plays a variety of instruments - fiddle, mandolin, piano, accordion and guitar - to back up his original songs. His unique music style is high energy, upbeat and irresistibly exuberant. The North Shore News reports, "Comeau has an authentic, soulful presence," a presence that "Vancouver's roots-music scene has immensely benefited" from, according to the Georgia Straight.

The Voodoo Allstars joining Comeau are Tim Hearsey, vocals and guitar; Roger Brant on bass; Chris Nordquist, drums and percussion; and Tom Keenlyside on sax. Together, these guys will keep you on the dance floor all night long.

Tickets to this heartfelt fundraiser are $20, available at WindSong Gallery in Sechelt, Gaia's Fair Trade Gifts in Gibsons and the Roberts Creek Health Food Store, with all profits going to Chelsea's Charity. Doors open at 8:30 p.m., and the fun begins at 9. Don't miss the chance to keep Chelsea's dream alive.
