Vocalist Laura Crema’s rich, powerful voice filled the Sechelt Band Hall last Saturday with sultry jazz standards to the accompaniment of the local Jazz Group of Seven.
“These guys are good,” said Crema, indicating the band. She was visiting from Vancouver and had connected with the seven musical men through guitarist Steve Giltrow. Several of the tunes were arranged by the Jazz Group’s John Frederickson, giving new life to old standards such as Route 66 and Summertime. Crema sang a lovely ballad of her own composition, Seraphina. The concert needed only a carafe of wine, candlelight and couples dancing to complete an ambient evening.
The next show from the Sunshine Coast Music Society is this Saturday, April 8 at the Highland Centre (657 Highland Road, at Lower Road and Highway 101). Baroque and Blue (Kelly Smit, piano; Sarah Harding, flute; and Tim Enns, percussion) will perform with singer guitarist Michael Friedman, new to the Coast but not new to music. Tickets for $20 (students $5) are at Strait Music and Laedeli Gifts.
