Beckmyer and Cattanach
Since Holly Beckmyer’s love of unusual, contemporary classical music began with her mother’s influence of Arvo Part and Bela Bartok, it is fitting that mother, Heather Cattanach, and daughter should perform this iconic song cycle together on Aug. 25. Pierrot Lunaire is a melodrama by Arnold Schoenberg, a setting of 21 poems, originally written in French by Albert Giraud, set in this cycle in German. Pierrot is usually performed with a quintet, but in this case, Cattanach has the harrowing role of playing the piano reduction of the whole score. Holly, the vocalist, performs in “Sprechstimme” style, or “speech-singing.” Pierrot touches on themes of the misunderstood artist, unrequited love and longing, and is coloured with dark, slapstick humour, hope and sentimentality, and childlike creativity, with a heavy dose of nightmarish violence and fright. Holly has been studying the role with her voice teacher, Robyn Driedger-Klassen. See Pierrot Lunaire on Thursday, Aug. 25, 7:30 p.m. (doors at 7), at St. Bartholomew’s Church in Gibsons.

GPAG show
Shorelines and Skylines, an exhibition by Anna May Bennett, holds an opening reception on Saturday, Aug. 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. Anna May Bennett, a Powell River artist in oils, writes: “Growing up on the East coast of Scotland, I knew as a child I would never live far from the sea. As a teen, my English professor stated in one report that I would ‘stare into the middle distance’ and these poetic and thought provoking words have inspired the theme of my current works. My paintings explore the magnificent West Coast landscape: the greatness of height, the weight of the depths and the interest of things in between and underfoot.” Exhibition runs from Aug. 25 to Sept. 18 at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery, open Thursday to Monday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more: Michael Aze at 604-886-0531.
