Art Beat

A series of artistic events and workshops running this month are thanks to Joann Hetherington who lends her store as a venue for artistic endeavours at this time of year. All events will be held at Zocalo at 441 Marine Dr. in Gibsons.

Water Colour – The Next Step, Level 2, with Donna Swain is on Feb. 6 to 8 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Creative and juicy water colour play, working experimentally with the water colour medium and introducing mixed media to enhance images. Fee is $200. Register at [email protected]

Wet Felting – Prayer Flags with Kim Fenton is on Thursday, Feb. 9 from 4 to 8 p.m. Learn basic felting techniques by making your own prayer flags, using the chakra colours. Fee is $60. Register at [email protected] to find out what equipment to bring.

Railtown returns

Railtown Sound System and guests descend on Roberts Creek Hall on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 9 p.m. It’s a kick ass, nine-piece, live dub reggae band, with two DJs/producer guys, percussionist, and an MC with a huge love of reggae, dub, dancehall and bass in a room with a giant sound system. Tickets are on sale now at MELOmania in Roberts Creek, online or at the door.

Amadeus

From the London stage via HD satellite to the Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt comes Amadeus on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. Lucian Msamati (Luther, Game of Thrones) plays Salieri in Peter Shaffer’s iconic play, broadcast from the National Theatre, and with live orchestral accompaniment by Southbank Sinfonia. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, a rowdy young prodigy, arrives in Vienna, the music capital of the world, determined to make a splash. Court composer Antonio Salieri has the power to promote his talent or destroy his name. The play won multiple Olivier and Tony Awards when it had its premiere at the National Theatre in 1979. Writing group

There’s a new group in Gibsons called the Gibsons Writers’ Group through Meetup.com. They meet at the Black Bean coffeehouse on Marine Drive on Fridays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., introduce themselves and write on laptops or on notepads with pens for two hours without interruption. Book launch

Margaret West will present her latest book called The Way We Were: Growing Up Years Ago on a Farm, a story set in the 1930s and ‘40s on the prairies, at the Gibsons Library on Feb. 4 at 1 p.m. All are welcome. For more information email [email protected]

Dance show

On Sunday, Feb. 5, the Coast Academy of Dance presents a Winter Dance Show at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Gibsons Heritage Playhouse. Call 604-885-2263. Tickets are $18 adults, $15 seniors/students at Starbucks and Lucky’s Smokehouse in Sechelt.

Bentall and Carson

Dustin Bentall and Kendel Carson have chemistry, energy and charm. These artists are bright staples of the West Coast roots rock scene and have made waves all across Canada, the U.S. and Europe. You’ll find them sharing stages with John Prine, Elvis Costello, Blue Rodeo, and the list goes on. Their most recent collaborative album is You Are an Island – a haunting departure from the straight ahead country leanings of previous releases. On Feb. 10 the duo comes to the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons at 7 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.share-there.com

Family Day movie

Allen Stevenson and Ed Aiken proudly present a Family Day weekend movie, Moana. Come and join them at Gibsons Elementary on Friday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.). Free admission with a concession is provided by Gibsons Elementary PAC.

Marley night

The 17th annual bash in honour of the incomparable and sadly missed Bob Marley takes place at the little Legion in Roberts Creek on Saturday, Feb. 11 starting at 9 p.m. The show features the Hoolicans with special guests and DJ Nils. It’s $6 for members, $12 for guests of members. Come early as it always sells out. Doors are at 8 p.m.

Elvis tribute

Elvis is in the house on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Royal Canadian Legion in Sechelt at 8 p.m. Elvis tribute artist Ben Klein channels the King in a show, From Swing to King. Tickets are $25. Members and guests are welcome. Call 604-886-2526 for more.

Youth art

The Gibsons Public Art Gallery is calling for submissions for Shout Out Youth Art 2017 – In Motion. They are accepting submissions from artists aged two to 18 to take part in GPAG’s eighth annual installation of art created by local youth that runs from March 9 to April 2. This year’s theme is In Motion – Art Inspired by Movement: animation, film, kinetic sculpture, drawing, painting, dance. No limits to creativity here. Encourage an imaginative young person in your life to make a submission. Young people can submit up to two pieces of work in any medium, to be delivered to the Gallery (431 Marine Dr. in Gibsons) between Sunday, Feb. 26, 11 a.m., and Sunday, March 5, 4 p.m. (the Gallery is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays). Works need to be accompanied by the entry form which can be obtained at libraries and schools, or downloaded from www.gpag.ca

Jazz coordinator

Carole Rubin was the power behind the Pender Harbour Jazz Festival for many years – first as part of a team supporting the interim artistic director Barry O’Hara for one year, then as artistic director/coordinator for the next eight years before retiring in 2016. Artists Co-operative

The Sunshine Coast Artists Co-operative (formerly The Landing Gallery) is seeking new artist members.
