Anne Lindsay performs at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Anne Lindsay is an eclectic and creative Toronto-based fiddler (Blue Rodeo, Led Zeppelin, the Chieftains, James Taylor, the Oliver Schroer band). She will be performing at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. The Coast’s Bad to the Bow is the opening act. Fans of folk, jazz, classical or creative fusion music will delight in Lindsay’s solo violin performance. She has three award winning CDs of her own and has been named Jazz Violinist of the Year (National Jazz Awards) and Solo Instrumentalist and Producer of the Year (Canadian Folk Music Awards). She was the resident fiddler for the Toronto Maple Leafs and for the stage production of Lord of the Rings.

Her new CD, Soloworks, consists of 13 solo compositions, from toe-tapping fiddle tunes to lyrical ballads, that the musician performs on violin, voice, piano and nyckelharpa. Travelling Book Café

Mary Burns’ Travelling Book Café rolls in to the Sechelt Public Library on Saturday, Nov. 19 from 3 to 5 p.m. for magic, reading and discussion. Listen to Burns read from her historical novel The Reason for Time, experience magic with magician Gerardo Avila, and take in a discussion of magic and belief with Burns, Avila and Rev. Clarence Li. What makes you a believer? Come with your stories and magical experiences of all kinds. Everyone is welcome this Saturday in the Community Room at the Sechelt Public Library.

Fairs this weekend

Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 19 and 20, is the big fundraiser for the Arts Council: Deck the Halls Arts and Crafts Fair. This annual Fair is offered at the Arts Centre (Trail and Medusa, Sechelt) with vendors from the Coast and throughout B.C. Listen to live music by young performers. Fair runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and admission is $2 at the door. Call 604-885-5412 for more.

This weekend check out the Artisan Craft Fair at Sunnycrest Mall in Gibsons, on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Or visit the Vintage Christmas Market on Saturday at the Sarah Wray Hall, 4334 Irvine’s Landing Road, Garden Bay, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s a fundraiser for the Pender Harbour Living Heritage Society.

Musical theatre show

Nikki Weber presents A Tribute to Musical Theatre with excerpts from musical productions such as Phantom of the Opera and Showboat and starring a cast of talented Coast vocalists: Jacquie Allen, Daniel Neff, John Payne, Trudi Diening and Sara Douglas to name a few. They are accompanied by the dream instrumental team of Miles Black, Boyd Norman and Sacha Fassaert. Show is on Friday, Nov. 25 at 7:30 p.m. at Pender Harbour School of Music and again on Nov. 26 at 1:30 p.m. at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons. Tickets are $22 at Strait Music in Sechelt and the Blackberry Shop in Gibsons, or $25 at the door.

Serpent film

On Monday, Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m., the SC Film Society presents Embrace of the Serpent, a Colombian film (2015) in Spanish with English subtitles at the Heritage Playhouse, Gibsons. This extraordinary adventure, based on a true story, follows a charismatic tribal shaman as he helps two scientists, 40 years apart, search for plants in the Amazon. This poetic, hypnotic film explores the devouring of a culture by colonialism. Shot in black and white, this is a unique work of art.

Events get-together

Sechelt Arts, Culture and Com-munications co-ordinator Siobhan Smith writes: “Many of you participated in our Festivals and Events meeting in January, and I’d love to host another get-together before the year is through. It will be an opportunity to hear what each of us is planning in 2017, and share any Canada 150 projects you may be involved in.  Please join us Thursday, Nov. 24, 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Community Meeting Room (across the hall from the Sechelt Public Library).”

Stroke author

Ron Smith is coming to Gibsons Library (470 S. Fletcher) on Wednesday, Nov. 23, at 6 p.m. to read from his new book, The Defiant Mind: Living Inside a Stroke. It’s a powerfully insightful book that is garnering good reviews. If you know someone recovering from a stroke or brain injury, you may want to attend this reading.

Gunnars gallery

Artist Kristjana Gunnars has opened her Shipwreck Gallery on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Sundays she’ll be there if you’d like to stop by 5873 Skookumchuck Road in Sandy Hook. You’ll see the sign for Shipwreck Gallery. Park at the bottom and walk up to the top. If you have mobility issues, the top parking space is saved for you. Wildlife fundraiser

The Gibsons Wildlife Rehab Centre is holding their annual huge silent auction again at Sunnycrest Mall on Friday, Nov. 25 between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 26, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Up to 300 items will be for auction including donated artwork from local artists.
