Harmony Arts

Once again artist Brian Romer will be at the Harmony Arts Festival in West Vancouver from Aug. 2 to 11. He will be part of the Showcase Exhibition at the Ferry Building Gallery in Ambleside Park. This invitational show runs from Aug. 2 to 18, with the opening reception this (Friday (Aug. 2) from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Romer will also be doing a plein air demo outside the Ferry Building on the last day of the festival,Sunday, Aug. 11, from 3 to 5 p.m.

Another chance

Because of a sudden illness, artist Stephen Murphy had topostpone his Bookbinding /Make and Take Soft Cover Journal demo until this Saturday, Aug. 3, from noon to 4 p.m. The fine art of handcrafted bookbinding takes place at The Landing Gallery (436 Marine Dr. in Gibsons). The project will introduce you to the basic techniques of paper selection, collating and folding, and sewing using the three-hole pamphlet stitch. There is a $5 fee to cover the cost of materials and tools. Just show up, but if you need to contact the gallery, call 604-886-0099.

Gambier

The Gambier Island Family Fair runs this Saturday, Aug. 3, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and includes crafts, food, pie contest, fun and games. See the BC Ferries schedule (www.bcferries.com) for departure times of the Gambier passenger ferry from Langdale.

Music in the Landing

Music in the Landing is back this Friday in the gazebo on the wharf from 7 to 8 p.m. with the Sunshine Brass Quintet led by John Frederickson, trumpet, with Travis McDonough, trumpet, Danielle Stevens, French horn, Bill Wishlow, trombone, and Michael Stephenson on tuba.

Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., The Midds will rock Pioneer Square with Ray McNally, Jeff Lucas, John Geoffrion and Grant Olsen. Busking in front of the Pink House is Dave Philley at 1:30 p.m. followed by the young, talented duo of Axel Loitz and Connor Lindsay.

Saturday evening in Winegarden Park bring your lawn chairs and blankets and enjoy another double bill of John 'Ten Bear' Thompson at 7 p.m. followed by Steven Hinton and Dave Patterson onblues harp, guitar and vocals.

Sunday at the Sundial Stage, hear Sostenuto with Serena Eades, violin, and Anna Lumiere, accordion and keyboard, play everything from tango to choro, French musette to folk.

A specialB.C. Day concert will be presented 1 p.m. Monday in WinegardenWaterfront Parkwith two Roberts Creek bands.First up will bejazz standard offerings by the Remnants with Dave Morgan, guitar, Richard Price, guitar/vocals, Laurie O'Byrne, vocals, Brock O'Byrne, bass, and Rob Milstead, drums. At 1:45 p.m. the rock band, The Ranters, take the stage.

Arts Centre show

This is the last weekend to see the latest Ceramics on the Edge 5 at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt. The show marks some interesting departures in styles and techniques for Coast ceramic artists. The show closes this Sunday, Aug. 4.

Salmon Confidential

On Aug. 7 the film Salmon Confidential by Twyla Roscovich is showing at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt (5714 Medusa) at 7 p.m. A discussion with Holly Higgins follows. Admission is $10 to 20 for this fundraiser for One Straw Society.

Sacred Sound

On many Wednesdays, a group of people have been gathering in the forest forSacred Sound in Sacred Space. You are invited among the trees to listen, laugh, sing and chant, to quiet your mind and open your heart.

Coffeehouse

The Pender Harbour School of Music coffeehouse has a special line-up for next Friday, Aug. 9: Ken Capron, a Gibsons singer/songwriter on voice and guitar, violinists Hanna Crudele and Simon Gidora of Coast Youth Orchestra perform light classical, and Sostenuto, Serena Eades on violin and Anna Lumiere on piano, will entertain.

Coffee and goodies will be sold and a $10 donation at the door is suggested. Doors open at 7 p.m. and music at 7:30. To perform on the second Fridays of the month or for information, call Joanne at 604-883-9749.
