Jane Mortifee and Kathryn Nicholson, icons of Vancouver’s music scene, are coming to town. More specifically, they, along with the award-winning Sound Eclectic Choir and noted musicians Ken Cormier and Renee Worst, are set to perform 7:30 p.m., April 29 at Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt.
The concert, titled Coming Home, is a benefit for Better At Home, a program for seniors created by United Way and managed by Sunshine Coast Community Services. A team of volunteers and some contractors are offering non-medical supports such as friendly visiting, light-housekeeping, yard work, minor home repairs, transportation, grocery shopping and, most recently, technical tutoring.
The number of seniors on the Coast is higher than the province’s average and since studies are showing that social isolation can negatively impact seniors’ health, Better At Home offers a way forward that can promote seniors remaining in their own residences, while staying connected to community.
Nicholson’s connection to both Better At Home (Vancouver) and her friendship with the effervescent Mortifee resulted in the creation of the April 29 concert, a benefit to the Sunshine Coast. The performers will also be absorbing their own transportation costs.
Tickets are available from Sechelt Visitors’ Centre, Laedeli in Sunnycrest Mall, Harbour Insurance in Madeira Park or share-there.com. Michelle Bruecker, Better At Home manager, reported that over half the tickets were sold as of April 1. Grab yours and support those who are supporting the Coast community.
