Vaudeville a winner

They kicked high, they told jokes that made the crowd groan, they flounced in fabulous costumes and sang nostalgic songs. Clearly, they loved it. The three performances of the Funtastics' Tribute to Vaudeville played to warm audiences at the Sechelt Seniors' Centre recently.

The cast was twice as big as the previous year and many of them had never been on stage in their lives. Others, like Gloria Fyles and Ed White, showed their stage experience. Special applause went to Tony Fraser with his show business style -also to Barb Christie posing as the former vaudeville queen, Vesta Tilley. Greig Soohen kept the acts rolling and Miss Berni G kept the beat humming, along with the drum roll specialist, Al Burns. The Sunday show was sold out, practically assuring that the Funtastics will rise again next year.

A Sunshine Coast Film Society special event on Monday, April 30, features a live performance by Anna Lumiere. The film is Chico y Rita (Cuba, 2011) in Spanish with English subtitles. Their passionate affair and partnership is endangered when a smooth-talking Yankee impresario tells Rita he can take her to showbiz glory in New York - without Chico.

That's at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons. Blackfish Pub is the sponsor and those who dine there before the film will get 15 per cent off by showing your membership.
