It’s that time of year again, when crisp breezes and a dash of white on the top of Elphinstone mountain herald the coming of winter … and with winter comes Christmas.
The musicians of the Sunshine Coast Community Orchestra Association (SCCOA) are joining forces on Dec. 11 at the Sechelt Indian Band Hall at 2.30 p.m. to bring you an afternoon of Christmas Magic. From the first sounds of the Sunshine Coast Youth Orchestra, audience members will be transported to faraway lands rich with colour and magic. Led by Kathleen Hovey, the youngest members of the SCCOA will bring the melodies of France, the Ukraine and England to life.
Making his debut with the Suncoast Concert Band, new member of the artistic team Tak Maeda will lead gifted players through familiar Christmas favourites from Puerto Rico and France, in addition to a lovely medley from the magical movie, The Polar Express.
After intermission, Sarah Poon will guide the members of the Coast Chamber Strings as they delight the audience with works by Handel, Morten Lauridsen and an amazing tone poem by Todd Parrish about Boreas, who is the cold north wind of Greek mythology.
The Coast Symphony Orchestra will round out the magic with dances from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker ballet, prior to Edette Gagné leading the massed performance of Sleigh Ride that has become a much loved tradition at this show. Tickets are $20 adults, children under 12 free. Available at Strait Music in Sechelt, and Laedeli in Sunnycrest Mall, Gibsons.
Carols will be sung. Hearts will be warmed. Magic will be felt. See you there!
