Celebrate Christmas in the Creek

Christmas in the Creek is a celebratory event on Monday, Dec. 25 from 4 to 9 p.m. at Roberts Creek Hall. Meet with others for a full turkey dinner with stuffing, gravy, potatoes, carrots and all the baked goods one could handle, all provided by donors. Volunteers and gifts of kind are welcome. Bring a potluck dish to share, your cutlery and dishes and your musical spirit. Contact Debra at 604-741-8669. 

This Weekend 

The Sing-Along Messiah with the Coast Messiah Orchestra takes place at the Sechelt Band Hall on Saturday, Dec. 23 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $25 at the door. Could be a sell out: email [email protected] for ticket availability. 

Fibre Art Sale 

Kittens’ Mittens holds a sale of hand-crafted items on Saturday, Dec. 23 from noon to 4 p.m. at 537 Veterans Road, Gibsons. Enjoy cider, cookies and locally made shawls, scarves, hats, fingerless gloves and hand-spun yarn from fibre artist Verna Chan. 

Jamaican Dance Party 

Come warm up on the dance floor with Monty Montego and the Rocksteady Crew at a Jamaican Dance Party on Dec. 23 at the Roberts Creek Legion. Doors open at 8 p.m. Members pay $5; guests $10. 

FOG 

The Sunshine Coast Arts Council starts off 2018 with their annual Friends of the Gallery (FOG) Exhibit. Artists must be a member of the SC Arts Council and submit a work created during the previous year. Last year over 90 Coast artists participated in the event with submissions representing the breadth of mediums and forms. If you are interested in being part of the exhibition, it’s not too late. Come to the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre, Sunday, Dec. 31 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. with a work completed during 2017. You can also download the entry form from: sunshinecoastartscouncil.com. The exhibition runs from Jan. 3 to 28, 2018. The opening reception is on Sunday, Jan. 7 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Doris Crowston Gallery in the Arts Centre, 5714 Medusa St., Sechelt. Ring in the New Year 

Come ring in 2018 with all your favourite classic rock hits. Playback will be knocking them out of the park all night at the Gibsons Legion in the Hall with The Relics playing in the Lounge on Sunday, Dec. 31. Doors open at 8 p.m. Buffet and champagne at midnight, dancing all night. Members $25, guests $30. Call 604-886-2411 for tickets. 

Funktete for NYE 

Funktete is playing New Year’s Eve at Leo’s Restaurant in Lower Gibsons. The $80 ticket includes a five-course meal, champagne at midnight and fun with Funktete. Eat, drink, dance, and experience the breaking of the plates at Leo’s Tapas & Grill, 274 Gower Pt. Road, Gibsons. For info and reservations phone 604-886-9414. Band plays from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Karen Graves, John Rule, Anna Lumiere and Budge Schachte hope to see you there. 

Creek NYE 

New Year’s in the Creek features a family-friendly, licensed event for the community sponsored by the Roberts Creek Legion on Sunday, Dec. 31 from 7 p.m. to past midnight at the RC Hall. Admission is by donation, with live music and a community potluck – feel free to bring finger foods or desserts. Live music includes surprise guests and an open stage / jam hosted by the Jeevious Family. To reserve stage time contact [email protected].

And at the Legion, 9 p.m. to 3 a.m., Project Future presents Cronneloctopus (El Pulpo), The Funkdealer (Hol/\gram), Buzy B, Octivate, Bridge and Mieke Jay on visuals. Dress in your best or wear your sweats. Advance tickets only at the Legion; no ticket sales at the door.

Secret Cove NYE 

Rockwater in Halfmoon Bay offers a New Year’s Eve dinner and dance party until the wee hours on New Year’s Eve. Email [email protected] or phone 604-885-7038. 

Music for Youth Grant

Sunshine Coast Community Services and Coast Cultural Alliance are pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for this year’s Daniel Kingsbury Music for Youth Endowment Grant. Applicants may request funding assistance for opportunities such as music lessons, musical instruments, software, electronic production, studio time or studio mentoring. The foundation is able to offer several grants up to and including $500 this year. The grant is open to Sunshine Coast youth ages 13 to 19 requiring financial assistance, and those who applied in the past may apply again. Applications can be completed by the youth themselves or by a nominator who would like to recommend a youth, with the consent of the youth. Deadline for applications is Jan. 3, 2018.
