Canadian Folk Music nominees

Two Coast musicians, Joel Fafard and Janet Panic, have recently been nominated in this year's Cana-dian Folk Music Awards. Fafard was nominated for traditional singer of the year for his album Cluck Old Hen, and Panic was nominated as Aboriginal songwriter of the year for her tune Samples. The awards ceremony takes place in December. Fafard will be performing a concert at the Arts Building in Gibsons on Dec. 9. Watch this column in the coming weeks for further details.

Opera

Wagner's Siegfried is brought to the Raven's Cry Theatre in Sechelt by satellite in the New York Metropolitan Opera series this Saturday starting at 9 a.m. For more about this new production or to reserve your ticket, call 604-885-4597.

Meet the author

Deanna Proach, the author of the exciting historical novel Day of Revenge, will meet the public this Saturday, 1 to 3 p.m., at Woods Showcase in Sunnycrest Mall in Gibsons.

Hunt and Proctor

Pamela Holl Hunt is a talented painter who works in oils, in an abstract impressionistic style. Her work is being presentedat the Gibsons Public Art Gallery (GPAG) from Nov. 3 to Dec. 5.

In the Eve Smart Gallery at the GPAG,the art of Frank Proctoris being shown until Nov. 15. Proctor's family and Legion representatives will be in attendance at the artists' reception. The reception for both artists is at the gallery on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 2 to 4 p.m. Proctor was a World War Two veteran who settled in Mission after the war and became a well-known nature artist.

Cartea CD

Local musician Deanna Cartea has embarked on her musical career and is happy to announce the release of her debut CD entitled Open Road that was recorded and produced here on the Coast at Strait Sound Studio.

An official CD release event is slated for this Saturday, Nov. 5, at a studio concert at Strait Sound. Email [email protected] or phone 604-886-9722 for ticket information. Jazz begins

A Winter Jazz Series begins at the Gumboot Restaurant in Roberts Creek on Saturday at 7 p.m. Local jazz heroes the Remnants (think Velveteen Rabbit) hold court. Guitarists David Morgan and Richard Price and bassist John Paulin (former members of The Used Guys) are joined by song stylist/chanteuse Laurie O'Byrne anddrummer John Rule for a relaxing, fun-filled evening of swing and jazz standards. Laurie Verchomin (author of the jazz book The Big Love) hosts this new series. Music begins at 7 p.m. Suggested donation is $10 at the door. Call 604-885-4216 for reservations and more information.

Concert

Award-winning classical guitarist Michael Partington performs at St. Hilda's Anglican Church in Sechelt on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 2:30 p.m. Admission is $15, at the door.

Film

The SC Film Society presents Wind Journeys, a film made in Colombia, Argentina, Germany and Netherlands in 2009, by director Ciro Guerra, in Spanish with English subtitles.

Wind Journeys captures a side of Colombia rarely portrayed in cinema. This beautifully pensive film tells the story of an aging accordion player and a young aspiring musician as they trek across the country.Filled with stunning vistas and incredible performances, musical and theatrical, Wind Journeys' mystical elements are juxtaposed with the Colombian landscape.

The film screens on Monday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m. with doors opening at 7 at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse.

Whelan film

Pender Harbour film-maker Dianne Whelan's latest documentary Forty Days at Base Camp (see Coast Life, fall issue) was the opening film for the Banff Mountain Film Festival last Saturday. After three sold-out screenings and critical acclaim at the Vancouver International Film Festival, the film will have a week of screenings at the Vancity Theatre in Vancouver from Nov. 25 to Dec. 1. Whelan will be in attendance on Nov. 25 and 26. Tickets are available on-line at www.viff.org, or call 1-604-683-FILM (3456).

The feature documentary has sparked an HD television series, Base Camp Everest. Make Believe Media and Rebel Sister Productions announced the co-production development of the series to be helmed by Whelan. In the spring of 2012, Whelan and her crew will return to Kathmandu to start filming an eight-part series.

Book of Trees

You are invited to the book launch of Mnemonic: A Book of Trees, just released by Goose Lane Editions and written by local author Theresa Kishkan. She'll be at the Arts Centre, 5714 Medusa in Sechelt, on Tuesday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. for a reading, followed by refreshments and book sales (courtesy of Talewind Books). Admission is free. Everyone is welcome.

Creative in the Creek

It's a guaranteed fun evening at Creative in the Creek that takes place on Thursday, Nov. 10, at the Gumboot Café. Doors open at 7, start time is 7:30 p.m. Included are singer/songwriter/rapper Johanna Renee, singers Angie, Baili and Joe (back by popular demand after last month's debut), performance storyteller Marlena Blavin and host David Roche as MC and amuser. Admission is by donation.

101 Art

For November, 101 Office Supply in Sechelt is displaying photographs by Don Petry. He started photographing in the 1940s, using a folding camera and flash gun to capture big bands in concert. In his current landscape photography, Petry enjoys the challenge of capturing scenes in unusual or extreme lighting conditions. He is still using film, transparency and black and white, in 35mm and 2.5 square formats. For this show, he has mounted a selection of mid-format prints covering a variety of natural scenes.

Peace music

You are invited to participate in a musical event with a gathering of musicians and friends to experience Peace and Remembrance. Bring your voice and your instruments on Friday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. to Living Faith Lutheran Church in Davis Bay, and join in or listen. Art show

Local artist Dean Hunt's Pk'Vs (Wild Man of the Woods) mask is now showing at the Vancouver Art Gallery as part of the exhibition Shore, Forest and Beyond: Art from the Audain Collection, from now until Jan. 29, 2012. See www.deanhunt.weebly.com.
