"Canada's gift to the period instrument musical world" is how Frances Heinsheimer Wainwright, artistic director of the Coast Recital Society (CRS), refers to the world-famous Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra. As part of a major western Canadian tour, the Orchestra will touch down in Sechelt for a concert on 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 30, at the Raven's Cry Theatre. Ticket holders should note that the concert start time has changed to 2 p.m.
"This is a highlight of our concert season," Wainwright said, "one of the world's top baroque orchestras, with 18 players and a fabulous program. It will be a memorable celebration of music."
The Orchestra's Sunshine Coast program will include works by Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and two symphonies by the rarely heard composer Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, known as the Black Don Juan, who dazzled 18th century Paris society with his sword as well as his violin. Tafelmusik's featured soloists for this program are the Orchestra's principal cellist Christina Mahler and violinists Aisslinn Nosky and Julia Wedman.
Tafelmusik is led by concertmaster and music director Jeanne Lamon, who is credited with inspired guidance of "one of the world's top baroque orchestras."
Founded in 1979, Tafel-musik performs more than 50 concerts each season from its home base in downtown Toronto, and makes regular tours across North America, Europe and Asia. The players are specialists in historical performance practice and perform on original instruments or modern replicas faithful in design and construction to the originals. The Orchestra is baroque orchestra-in-residence at the University of Toronto's faculty of music and has a long-standing partnership with Toronto's baroque opera company, Opera Atelier. A frequent presence on CBC Radio, Tafelmusik has released 76 CDs, winning nine Juno awards and many international recording prizes.
Ticket holders for the Nov. 30 event are invited to meet members of the Orchestra at a reception, Take Tea With Tafelmusik, following the concert, at the Seaside Centre in Sechelt.
