The next film in the Green Film Series, Queen of the Sun: What Are theBees Telling Us, will be shown on Monday, March 5, at the GibsonsHeritage Playhouse at 7:30 p.m.
The film tells a dramatic story of the struggles of beekeepers, scientists and philosophers from around the world as they deal with the catastrophic disappearance of bees. The Gibsons Green Team andSustainable Coast Magazine in collaboration with the Sunshine CoastFilm Society is sponsoring this series.
This special series features environmental-themed films, discussions to engage the audience and door prizes. After the film, members of the local beekeepers' association will be on hand for discussion. Tickets are $5 for film society annual members, $8 for others. For moreinformation see www.greenfilms.ca.
Hanscom show
The second exhibition in the Arts Council's new season, Jay Hanscom's The Vulture, The Loot and The Anvil, continues until March 11 at the Doris Crowston Gallery at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre (corner of Trail and Medusa) in Sechelt.
Hanscom has built his show around the gallery space, taking advantage of its strengths, bringing the viewer into a more intimate experience of the work. Hanscom, who currently lives in Victoria, shows mixed media drawings on paper and a series of large-scale mixed media and resin pieces on wood box frames.
This weekend
Tonight (Friday) fiddler Erynn Marshall returns to the Coast with songwriter Carl Jones performing at St. Bart's Church (North Road and Gibsons Way) starting at 7:30 p.m.
The sacred drum workshop takes place on Saturday at the Sunshine Coast Museum from 1 to 4 p.m. with Tsawaysia Spukwus. Register by calling the museum at 604-886-8232.
The Good Lovelies perform in Madeira Park on Sunday at 2 p.m. as part of the Pender Harbour Music Society's season of great entertainment. See www.penderharbourmusic.ca for more.
Gallery info
Gibsons Public Art Gallery (GPAG) will host the Young People's Art Show partnered with WaterCan (Water Canada). Submissions are due this Sunday, March 4 so kids should get their two artwork entries on a water theme into the gallery. (See www.gibsonspublicartgallery.ca for submission forms.) All young people's art is accepted and a $10 art supplies gift card from Woods Showcase is given to each participant. It will be curated March 12 and 13 and kids are invited to help hang the show with mentor artists/curators.
Also, the gallery is pleased to announce that Ron White is the winner of Bodhi Drope's Cedar Waxwings digital photograph. They thank all who supported the Gallery and a special thank you to Drope for his generous donation.
Women's Day
International Women's Day, a day of respect for women of all nationalities, is coming up on March 8. To celebrate, a potluck supper and entertainment event will be held at the Roberts Creek Hall from 5 to 9 p.m. All are welcome.
Art classes
The Gibsons School of the Arts presents six week-long art classes this summer beginning in June. Two of the classes are already full: Greta Guzek and Michael O'Toole's acrylic classes. Still available are classes in portrait oil painting, landscapes in watercolour, acrylic and mixed media. Those who register and pay in full by May 1 are eligible to win a free workshop.
