Cellist Alban Gerhardt and pianist Steven Osborne perform for the Coast Recital Society at the Raven’s Cry Theatre, this Saturday, Nov. 4, at 2:30 p.m.
Alban Gerhardt has established himself as one of the greatest cellists of our time. He mesmerizes audiences, with his intense musicality, natural and compelling stage presence and insatiable artistic curiosity. His gift for shedding fresh light on familiar scores, along with his appetite for investigating new repertoire from centuries past and present, truly set him apart from his peers.
Berlin’s Tagesspiegel describes Gerhardt as “a magician of cantabile playing and a master of virtuosic panache.”
CRS audiences will remember Steven Osborne’s stunning solo recital two years ago as one of the highlights of the CRS season. Known for his insightful and idiomatic interpretations of diverse repertoire, his concerts are thought-provoking and deeply moving. His vast technical command is balanced by penetrating insight, mesmerizing colour control and breathtaking articulation.
London’s Daily Telegraph notes: “Some pianists gild everything they touch with their own personality; some are like chameleons, finding a new colour for each composer … Scottish pianist Steven Osborne does both.”
Gerhardt and Osborne’s duo performances have been publicly and critically acclaimed without exception. Intelligence and instinctive musicality are the hallmarks of these two exceptional musicians.
“The artists possess an almost subliminal sense of what the other is about to do, so that every musical gesture they make seems totally spontaneous, as if they are exploring the music for the first time; it’s all so fresh, never over studied” (The Guardian).
This extraordinary musical collaboration will feature solo and duo performances of music by J.S. Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, Claude Debussy and Johannes Brahms.
