The 12th annual Pender Harbour Blues Festival gets set to roll starting this Friday, June 5 at 4 p.m. at the Harbour Spirit Centre in Madeira Park. Music and dancing begin at various locations in the area – from John Henry’s Marina (a free event with Joe Stanton at noon on Saturday) to the ever popular Garden Bay Pub on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. This weekend
Get your tickets in advance for this Friday’s (June 5) 7 p.m. performance from Definitely Diva at the Botanical Garden, Mason Road, West Sechelt. This musical evening is to raise funds for the Garden. Tickets are $30 at the Sechelt Visitor Centre.
The St. John’s United Artists invite you to their show of work on Friday, June 5 from 10 to 7 and Saturday, June 6 from 10 to 5 at the St. John’s United Hall in Davis Bay.
Arts AGM
The Arts Building Annual General Meeting is this Saturday, June 6 at 10 a.m. Come and hear what has happened over the year and what the plans are for next year. The Arts Building Society board is having a seven-year itch so are looking for new, creative minds who are interested in wearing directors’ hats. See artsbuilding.org
Music duo
A duo of Darren Cassidy and Roger Potter bring their mixture of classic rock, country and blues to the Blackfish Pub in Gibsons, on Saturday, June 6 at 8 p.m. There’s no cover charge but audience can join in a 50/50 draw; proceeds go to the Ride to Conquer Cancer.
Landing Gallery
Trisha Joel and Georgina Brandon are the featured artists for June at the Landing Co-op Gallery with their show Flora & Fauna. Natural dyed silk scarves with printed leaves flutter from the ceiling and on the walls hang oil paintings of inquisitive local animals.
The show runs from June 1 to 30 with a “last chance” cup of tea with the artists on Sunday, June 28 from 3 to 5 p.m. Cindy Riach is the guest artist at the Landing Gallery for the month of June. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. See www.landing gallery.ca for more.
Concert
At 7 p.m. on Friday, June 12 you are invited to a concert, A Canadian Spring, Eh? from the Suncoast Phoenix Choir at the Calvary Baptist Church, Gibsons. The performance runs again at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 13 at St. Hilda’s Church, Sechelt. The choir is directed by Sara Douglas and is accompanied by Paula Seward. Admission is by donation at the door.
Soil and sea
The film Symphony of the Soil by director Deborah Koons Garcia screens Monday, June 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Heritage Playhouse. Also on the program is a short film preview: This Living Salish Sea from filmmaker Sarama in honour of World Oceans Day. Admission is by donation. Doors open at 7 p.m. The documentary is an intriguing presentation that highlights possibilities of healthy soil creating healthy plants creating healthy humans living on a healthy planet. This screening is sponsored by the Gibsons Garden Club.
Warehouse Show
Friday, June 12 at 5 p.m. is opening night for an exhibition of paintings by Carol LaFave, Charly Mithrush, Donna Stewart, Lore Schmidts and Kasia Krolikowska. Join them in a celebration of art in an industrial space with eclectic flavour for their annual Warehouse Show. On this night 10 per cent of all sales go to the local SPCA. The show runs until Sunday, June 14 at 1877 Field Road in Wilson Creek, with part proceeds to the Ruby Slipper Fund and the Food Bank.

Gibsons Public Library invites you to a reading and conversation with author Tracey Lindberg on Thursday, June 11 at 6:30 p.m. when she reads from Birdie. All are welcome.
Cedar for Festival
Expressions of interest are invited until June 15 for Art and the Six Senses of Cedar, the planned exhibition for the next Sechelt Arts Festival, Oct. 15 to 25. This experiential art exhibition will feature multi-disciplinary visual and sensory perceptions of how 10 to 12 Coast-based artists interpret the subject of cedar. Influenced by different cultural backgrounds and the senses of sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, and spirit, visual artists, sculptors, fibre artists, writers and musicians will come together to collaborate in an “art as process” journey of self and collective discovery.
