Telescopes explained

Beginners’ Astronomy Night is at 7:30 p.m. this Friday, April 10, at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt.

The Astronomy Club will show people how to use their instruments. Bring your own telescope, or meet the members with their own equipment. Admission is free, but donations are accepted at the door. See www.coastastronomy.ca for more information.

Artist demo

Some of the artists involved in the Azo Gold show at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery will be presenting talks the next few Saturdays. This Saturday, April 11 at 12:30 and 2 p.m. Sandy Kay will talk about the inspiration behind her work, followed by a Q and A session.

On Sunday, April 12 at 12:30 and 2 p.m. Lori Sokoluk will give a talk followed by Q and A. From 12 to 3 p.m. she will be doing ongoing art demonstrations. Stop by to chat (431 Marine Drive) or ask questions.

Madeleine Thien

Madeleine Thien is the next author to read in the series presented by the Sunshine Coast Arts Council and sponsored by the Canada Council for the Arts. 

Thien will be reading at the Arts Centre in Sechelt on Saturday, April 11 at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7:30. All are welcome and admission is by donation.

Thien’s work is acclaimed in Canada and internationally. Her book of short fiction, Simple Recipes, won B.C.’s Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, and the novel Certainty won Amazon Books in Canada First Novel Award. She is currently writer-in-residence at the University of British Columbia.

Landing Gallery

The Landing Co-op Gallery in Gibsons presents a series of guest artists for the spring months. The first artist featured is Dean Schutz, known for his striking murals on the Sunshine Coast. His show of his portable-sized work will show for the month of April. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Ida

On Monday, April 13 the Sunshine Coast Film Society screens Ida at 7:30 p.m. In 1960s Poland, Anna, a young noviate nun on the verge of taking her vows, discovers a dark family secret dating back to the years of Nazi occupation. Forced to embark on a journey of discovery that threatens to change the course of her life, Anna meets her only living relative, her aunt — a hard-bitten stranger.

Admission is $5 for film society members and $9 for non-members. The film screens at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons. See more at www.scfs.ca

FOPA

The Sunshine Coast Festival of the Performing Arts (FOPA) is rapidly approaching.

Sessions are from Monday, April 13 to Friday, April 29 and the public is invited to sit in. Now in its 42nd year, Festival 2015 has 168 performances by individuals and ensembles over the three-week celebration of local musicians, singers and dancers.

There will be 74 awards handed out to top performers, as well as engraved wooden medallions. As a registered charitable society, FOPA greatly appreciates donations at the door. They also very much rely on community volunteers to organize events and to assist a volunteer board of directors. Traceable

Producer Lauren Grant, formerly of the Sunshine Coast, announces the April 24 premiere of Traceable, a documentary about the fashion industry and its disconnect to the factory workers who make our clothes. It will be broadcast on MTV, Bravo, M3 and E! Traceable is a nominee for Best Arts & Culture Doc at the Golden Sheaf Awards.
