Book sale

The Festival of the Written Arts will host its annual book and souvenir sale at the Trail Bay Centre in Sechelt today (Friday) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. See more about the festival at www.writersfestival.ca.

Opera

On Saturday morning at 10 a.m. the Raven's Cry Theatre will screen a Philip Glass opera, Satyagraha, live in HD by satellite from the New York Metropolitan Opera. Craft fair

Sunnycrest Mall in Gibsons holds their annual Artisans Craft Fair tonight (Friday) from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. showcasing vendors of art and crafts suitable for gifts. Check it out.

Elves support

Try a guitar lesson from musician Bonar Harris and support the Elves Club at the same time. Bring a new unwrapped toy suitable for donation and he'll give you a trial lesson. Call first at 604-886-4893 to set up a time. The Elves Club provides Christmas hampers to those families who need community support.

Music Makers

On Nov. 20, the Music Makers will be in concert at St. John's United Church in Davis Bay at 2 p.m.featuring the Orff students, preschoolers, Suzuki violin students and the family choir. Tickets are $10 per family at the door. E-mail [email protected] for more.

Film

On Monday, Nov. 21, the SC Film Society presents Elling, a Norwegian comedy/drama by director Petter Naess, that was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2001 Academy Awards. Elling, an anxious, mentally-challenged man, has lived with his mother for 40 years. When she dies, the health department sends him to live in an institution where he befriends the lovable and sex-crazed virgin, Kjell Bjarne. Elling is the story of how these two eccentrics find their place in the world with the help of each other, a social worker and a few unlikely new friends.Film screens at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are members: $5, single event: $8.

Shopping night

The Elphinstone Sec-ondary School Dry Grad 2012 class is raising funds by holding a Shopping Night Out on Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 7 p.m. in the school library. Local markets will be selling food, clothing, jewellery and toys. All are welcome to shop.

Watercolour class

Coffeehouse

The next Artesia Coffee-house will beheld Friday, Nov. 25, at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt.

Opening the night will be Axel Loitz, young singer/guitar player, followed by Baroque and Blue featuring Kelly Smit, grand piano,Sarah Harding, flute,and Tim Enns on drums. Yule B Swinging, featuring jazz vocalist Jacquie Allan, Anna Lumiere, piano, and Graham Ord, sax/flute/percussion, will close the evening.

Workshop

Upon popular demand, the Rock'N Art Gallery is excited to announce another stone sculpting workshop with resident sculptor Don Watson.

Workshop participants will learn how to sketch, model in clay and eventually carve a stone sculpture that they can take home.
