Royal Canadian Legion Branch #109 Gibsons has a full day of commemorations and entertainment planned for Remembrance Day, Nov. 11.
One of B.C.’s most popular and hard-working acts will be part of the day’s celebrations: husband and wife comedy and music team, Bernie and Red. They performed at the Legion on Remembrance Day 2015 and were a great hit, and the management of the Legion is delighted to have them back this year.
A Legion spokesperson said, “Bernie and Red have a fantastic repertoire of music that covers both world wars and more contemporary styles, and their comedy pieces are hilarious, so we were really pleased when we were able to secure them for this year.”
Bernie and Red began their musical partnership in Liverpool, England, back in the ‘60s. By the late ‘70s, they had emigrated to Canada and established themselves as a prominent feature of the entertainment scene in the West, performing their original musical compositions and comedy material. Gradually expanding their circuit, they began crisscrossing North America and have been touring the U.S. annually for the past 20 years. Regular appearances at festivals and winter resorts now serve as venues for the songs contained in their dozen recordings and a songbook. The continuing popularity of Bernie and Red is a testament to their intelligent and wickedly funny material, which is often cheeky, in the British music hall tradition, but never offensive. Their comedy songs are rich with word play and witty images, and their comedy routines, especially those taken from a woman’s perspective by Red, are spot on and very funny. This duo is not to be missed.
