Beach band benefit

Remember the Drew Camp Band that won the Battle of the Bands two years ago? Drew often performs with his musician father, Roger Camp, who is mounting a benefit for St. Mary's Hospital on his beachfront property in Roberts Creek.

Remember the Drew Camp Band that won the Battle of the Bands two years ago? Drew often performs with his musician father, Roger Camp, who is mounting a benefit for St. Mary's Hospital on his beachfront property in Roberts Creek.

Father, son and band (minus the drummer) will play from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, on their specially constructed stage on the beach, three houses down from Henderson Beach (at the end of Beach Road). He invites the public to come enjoy the music and make a donation. Over $10 donations could get you a Drew Camp CD, Left to the Imagination, and over $20, a double CD set.

The event is dedicated to Roger Camp's mother, who passed away a year ago in September, and it is also a big thank you to St. Mary's for helping him through his recent heart attack. Parking and access to the stage is at Henderson Beach. While parking on the dead end road, Camp asks that you pull over properly to allow access for others.

On the night before, Friday, Sept. 9, the Drew Camp Band will be performing at Benjamin's Restaurant in Sunnycrest Mall, so you can get an idea of their music.

Audition call?

An audition call takes place this Saturday, from 2 to 4 p.m. at St. Mary's Church Hall in Gibsons, for a stage production of It's A Wonderful Life - the Radio Play. The play will be performed as it would have in a radio studio in the 1940s, with actors at the microphones reading lines. More information is at www.kocproductions.com.

Sweet Sundays

It's the last Sunday of the season on Sept. 4 for entertainer Miss Berni G who has been playing piano at Wheatberries in Gibsons each week from 1 to 4 p.m. in the musical Sweet Sundays. Reportedly the place has been jumping and has become a favourite hangout for those who love to sing along or listen to musical nostalgia. Drop by this Sunday for the final show.

Laboratorio

Laboratorio 02 wishes to foster new ways of thinking about art and its meanings. Through a series of workshops, sound-thinking discussions and audience participation in community experimental music ensembles, organizers hope to expand creative ways of thinking.

The first session begins on Friday, Sept. 9, at the Gumboot Garden Café with an artist chat from Matthew Talbot-Kelly, whose interest in spatial and temporal movement evolved into a fascination with film animation.

On Sept. 10, a community ensemble workshop led by Giorgio Magnanensi and Viviane Houle takes place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. at the Roberts Creek Hall. For more about the series, see www.laboratorio.ca or e-mail [email protected].

On the horizon

Lots of interesting and thought-provoking series are coming up.

The Art of Seeing, a lecture series from art professionals, begins Sept 17 in Sechelt.

A Green Film series opens on Sept. 19, and at the end of September a documentary film festival takes place at the Raven's Cry in Sechelt. And you thought there was nothing to do. I'll write more about these events in the coming weeks.
