“Diversity is not a trend, mandate or a buzzword. It is the necessary next step for a global, forward-thinking culture.” - Jael Richardson
The Sunshine Coast Festival of the Written Arts is pleased to bring Jael Richardson, author, playwright and the founding artistic director of the Festival of Literary Diversity, to the Sunshine Coast.
Richardson will lead a workshop on diversity and inclusion based on her successful webinar series, “Beyond Diversity: Embracing Inclusion, Expanding the Arts.”
It is important to note that the issues she addresses are not exclusive to arts organizations. The workshop, Organizational Development: Diversity and Inclusion, will take place on Monday, Nov. 6, from 1 to 4 p.m., at the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden. In this workshop, we will look at how we can approach organizational development, capacity building, and board and volunteer recruitment with a view to ensuring our organizations are inclusive and reflect diverse communities.
This workshop will be of interest to local non-profit societies and has been made possible through the support of the Sunshine Coast Community Foundation. Fee is $30. Register at www.share-there.com or by calling the Festival office at 604-885-9631.
Richardson will also host an informal #diverseCanLit book club at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre on Tuesday, Nov. 7 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. You may have heard her regular book column on CBC Radio’s Q. This event is free and will offer an opportunity to learn about books written by a diverse range of writers and to share your recommendations. During her visit to the Sunshine Coast, Richardson will be visiting local schools with her children’s book, The Stone Thrower.
