John Gould, a writer, teacher and editor from Victoria, will give the next reading in the Sunshine Coast Arts Council fall series Saturday, Nov. 5, at 8 p.m. in the Doris Crowston Gallery in the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre on the corner of Trail and Medusa in Sechelt.
Gould is the author of the novel Seven Good Reasons Not to Be Good (2010), and of two collections of very short stories, most recently Kilter (2003), which was a finalist for the Giller Prize and a Globe and Mail Best Book.
Bill Gaston, author of Mount Appetite and Sointula, describes Gould's stories as "... small in the way nests are small.Or globes, or hearts, or irony.He is a unique and most valuable writer."
His fiction has appeared in literary periodicals across the country and has been adapted for short films. As an arts administrator, Gould created and co-ordinated programs for the BC Festival of the Arts and the Victoria School of Writing. He teaches in the department of writing at the University of Victoria and serves on the editorial board of the Malahat Review.
According to Robert Wiersema's review in the Vancouver Sun, Gould's latest work, a novel called Seven Good Reasons Not to Be Good is, "A marvel of delicacy, depth and insight ... This is a damn-near perfect book."
This reading is free thanks to the generosity of Canada Council for the Arts and the support of the Sunshine Coast Arts Council. Refreshments will be served.
