The Sunshine Coast Arts Council (SCAC) was pleased to announce the 2005 annual arts awards recipients at a Nov. 13 ceremony at the Arts Centre in Sechelt. These awards quietly and generously assist and encourage selected local artists in the development of their creative skill and passion.

The Anne and Phillip Klein Visual Arts Award was created in 2000 by the Klein family and friends in honour of Anne and Phillip, who were fascinating, talented and enthusiastically creative. This award recognizes those candidates pursuing an artistic passion later in life.

The winner this year is Marilyn Marshall, retired vice-president of Carleton University. Marshall's acquired fascination and rapidly developing skill in both drawing and painting (most often the human form) show her relentless enthusiasm. Her zealous affinity with the bold stroke and sweeping line continue to impress her peers and others.

The Gillian Lowndes Award was created by Gillian's parents and the Arts Council in 1981 to honour the memory of this promising young dancer and active member of the Sunshine Coast arts community. This award is given for excellence in any art medium.

Rob Marion is this year's recipient. He is an artist comfortable in many mediums; he has been recognized this year, particularly, for his ongoing involvement with the Roberts Creek mandala. Marion was there for its inception eight years ago and has intricately designed, organized and encouraged its transformation and community participation ever since.

These honours are awarded annually, as well as the Louise Baril Memorial Music Awards for music students pursuing advanced studies. Baril was very involved in the arts here, particularly in music, until her death in 1994.

The SCAC gratefully acknowledge the generosity of the contributors and congratulates, once again, this year's winners.
